Curlew sandpiper

Once more a rainy and windy day. I didn’t even get off in the morning for a walkabout on the Läänemaa shores and at midday I was already in Tallinn. Despite the increasing rain I decided to check out the best bird spot of the capital – Paljassaare. Here too the water level was high but on the seaweed banks sandpipers could be seen. At least 70 dunlins (Calidris alpina) had landed from migration in the area, among the other birds 6 curlew sandpipers (Calidris ferruginea), 2 knots (Calidris canutus) and 2 sanderlings (Calidris alba) caught my attention too. I had not yet come across a sanderling this year, this bird is the 266th bird species in my year list. The sanderling was also the last reasonably common species that I still had not seen. New species will evidently be added very rarely to the year list in the future because all remaining species are rarities and searching for them will be hard work.
