Snowdrop anemones

Snowdrop anemone; snowdrop windflower   Metsülane or anemoon       Anemone sylvestris

Beautiful flowers have always been picked whenever possible and a sensible picking will not harm the plants in the snowdrop anemone habitat.

One must be aware of the fact that the snowdrop anemone is a very poisonous plant, particularly the rhizome and just at the time of flowering. The toxic substances are volatile and may harm the  eyes as well as the mucous membranes. Rubber gloves should be worn if picking is really necessary.

Snowdrop anemones have snow-white large beautiful flowers with a slight violet tinge, diameter up to six centimetres, with five petal-like tepals, numerous yellow anthers and a shallow stigma. The leaves are hairy and palmately divided. Forms sparse stands on growing.

The  lime-loving plant is common on the dry meadows and alvars of northern and western Estonia.
