Video: "Small talk" before dinner

Klaara's and Klaus’s talk before dinner isn’t short either. Interesting – what would it be translated into human language? but here we all are free to let our imagination run ...

What did Klaus offer Klaara – voles, bank voles and other small rodents are hunted and this year is a so called ”mouse year”. Last year there were many frogs on the menu and the chicks were fed earthworms during one period (large common earthworms). Sometimes a passerine or bat is brought into the nest.

Near the tawny owls’ nest hollow we can find about two inches long dark turds with a diameter of about one inch. They are pellets that are regurgitated from the digestive tract. Since prey is swallowed whole there is a great deal of indigestible matter which makes up the pellet: rodent hairs, claws, bones …

If you have seen an owl flying up there is sometimes a feeling that something dropped from the bird’s beak? And it did, because the pellet is often ejected precisely on flying up.

Incubating is not only lazing on the eggs as is often thought. The eggs must be kept within the necessary temperature scheme, their position must be changed, which Klaara is doing in the photo and yet something more that only the owl mother knows.
