According to the literature, young deer bulls should also shed their antlers in March. The webcam gives us a good opportunity to find out if it`s true, although all years are not the same.

The „sprouting“ antlers of the two older deer on the bottom image should have grown for four weeks already. Keep in mind that the deer cows are „bare“ throughout the year.

The red deer lived in our forests until the end of the first millennium – during the warm climate stage. About a century and a half ago people started to keep red deer in deer enclosures. Hiiumaa had the first Estonian deer enclosure already in the end of the 19th century. In 1927, red deer were brought from Germany to the island of Abruka and in 1935 to Audru forest district from where they later also spread to other surrounding forests. In 1965 red deer were brought from Voronezh Oblast: eight to Vigala deer park, additional four to Abruka and also first four animals to Saaremaa. Later, additional animals have been brought from Latvia, Lithuania, Hungary and definitely from somewhere else...

A permanent population has spread to southern Estonia from the Latvian red deer population and the deer in the forests of Lääne-Virumaa are thought to have originated from our deer gardens.
