The mass spring migration of amphibians from their wintering areas to the spawning grounds has started. For the third year the Estonian Fund for Nature (ELF) arranges field frog actions for volunteers, ”Frogs Off Road(s) - Konnad teel(t)“, to help the migrating amphibians safely across highways.

This year the campaign ”Frogs off road(s)” has undergone a change. During the past two years ELF arranged frog actions on major roads but this year it is done in two locations with dense migration – at the beginning of the Piibe highway at Tammiku and near Leie and Oiu on the Viljandi highway. In other migration areas people who care for nature organise frog actions themselves.

26 frog action organisers have already signed up on the frog action page. ELF has trained them and assisted with getting equipment. In addition, nearly 100 helpers have also registered; they are prepared to step in to help the frogs when needed.

All are also invited to note sites for frog migration and report them on the Facebook page  „Konnad teel(t)” or on our website:  http://elfond.ee/konnadteel

In addition to helping the amphibians across roads, counting frogs by species takes place as in previous years. In the two previous years nearly 28 000 amphibians were counted. This will help scientists and migration information specialists to plan necessary animal tunnels on roads better in the future. See map:

During the frog migration period car drivers should be careful while driving during the dark hours on roads crossing migratory paths. On noticing volunteers with headlamps and yellow vests at the roadside speed should be reduced.
In favourable weather active migration lasts 4–5 nights.
