Asters on seashore

Sea aster

Sea aster      Randaster       Aster tripolium

We are used to the luxurious blooms of garden asters but the diameter of the sea aster flower is only a few centimetres.

The lilac ray florets are arranged in a single row, the disk florets in the centre are yellow. The leaves of the plant are narrow and fleshy, like those of other plants at the seashore that grow in a so called desert climate and must store water to stay alive.

The sea aster grows on seashores on the mainland as well as the islands, preferring soils percolated by sea water. With a high water level we see the plants growing, feet in water.
