Birdrace - Estonian Open 2014

The Pivarootsi Learning and Holiday Centre is located in South Lääne county, at the southern border of the Hanila parish in Pivarootsi village on the border to Pärnu county.

On Saturday,  August 16th the birdrace Estonian Open 2014 takes place organised by Estbirding and Viron Lintuseura. It is the most popular birdrace in Estonia and the one with the longest history. As the rally will take place for the 20th time this year, the birdrace area for the jubilee event is the whole of Estonia instead of a limited area as usual.

This time the birdrace has turned out to be particularly popular, setting a new participant record: 23 teams (1 Latvian, 8 Estonian, 14 Finnish teams) with 95 participants will test their knowledge in recognising and finding birds from 3 o’clock in early morning until 5 o’clock in the afternoon.

The winner of the race will be the team that during the 14 hours finds the greatest number of bird species – all species must have been seen or heard by more than half the members of the team. Excitement is added to the race by the fact that at this time of the year birds don’t sing any longer and so more effort must be made in finding them. Attracting birds with birdcall lure devices is not allowed at the race.

How many bird species the teams might see on Saturday depends largely on the weather. Calm weather without rain would be the most favourable for the observers. In such conditions  the best team would certainly register more than 150 species.

The summary of the race this year will take place at the Pivarootsi Learning and Recreation Centre in Lääne county, where the winner of the race will be established.
