Red-footed falcons have a good invasion year

On August 16, 2014 the 20th Estonian Open birdrace, arranged by Estbirding and Viron Lintuseura, took place in all of Estonia. A record number of 23 teams with altogether 94 members participated. In the race a new team record was set by the mixed Finnish-Estonian team Spithamn who in 14 hours collected 167 species. In addition to the team record the number of species seen by all teams during one race was bettered. Moreover, this year two teams (RC&Co and Sunset ökoriders) made an ecorace for the first time in the history of the race, using bicycles as the only mean of transport.

The weather was variable, from time to time it was raining which made birdwatching complicated. But despite this the race turned out to be very exciting. Among interesting species that were seen in the race area were the yellow-legged gull, red-necked phalarope and ortolan bunting in Hiiumaa; penduline tit, partridge, parrot crosbill and redpoll in Läänemaa; eagle owl, grey wagtail and black kite in Harjumaa. Red-footed falcons have a good invasion year at the moment, and the 15 specimens seen at the birdrace underlined this clearly.
