Goldenrod

Goldenrod; European goldenrod      Harilik kuldvits       Solidago virgaurea
Our native species, the common or European goldenrod, started flowering in the second half of July – we will see flowering plants for a long time until autumn. The habitats are well visible: road verges, meadows, open areas … A plant gleaming like gold in the August evening dusk but also an excellent honey plant.

Common or European goldenrod can grow up to a metre high in open habitats; the leaves are usually lanceolate but can have different shapes sometimes.

The flowers – actually the tiny flowers in the inflorescences are collected into composite inflorescences, capitulas, with a diameter of around 1 ½ centimetres. The inflorescence reminds of a flower because at the edge of it there are long ray flowers and at the centre short disk flowers. The little inflorescences in turn are joined into a great number of compound clusters - of course if conditions are favourablre. Such a creation of nature is truly worthy of its name - goldenrod.
