Ever more guests arrive where there is a crowd already. On Sunday our largest woodpecker turned up – the black woodpecker. The bird had a red patch on the crown of its head, so was either a male or a young bird. The female has a red patch only on the nape of the neck. It is a bird of large forest areas, and there may be up to 15 000 of them here in the winter.
