Nuthatch.
| Nuthatch | Sitta europaea |
The nuthatch is one of the few birds who can climb down trees with its head downwards – occasionally this can be seen at the feeder too. In the winter nuthatches like to keep company with tits.
The birds have a spool-shaped body and a short tail. Blue-gray back, underside is white, the flanks and the tail underside are rusty-brown. The black eyestripe and the long and strong bill are very characteristic. The male and the female are similar. This noticeable bird has a noticeable number of names in many languages.
Some local Estonian names: puurähn, puuvästrik, puuporr, kusetaja, takutoristaja, piibutaja...The nuthatch is seldom seen in our western islands. The estimate of winter numbers varies between one and two hundred thousand individuals.
