Two Eggs for Klaara

Tawny owl (Strix aluco): first two eggs.

With the coming of March the Tawny Owl’s forum friends discovered an egg in Klaara’s nest. And for several hours the watchers were worried about how long the mother was going to leave her nest with the fragile egg alone on its own? But our Bird of the Year, the tawny owl, very probably will not begin sitting on her eggs before the whole clutch is there. Two-three eggs should yet be coming and later we will see from how many eggs chicks will be hatched – it will certainly be very interesting to follow this.

Klaara spent some time sitting in the nest already before laying the eggs, as could be seen in the camera in February: the purpose was to warm the winter-cold nest and prepare for the incubation. Just now she must see to it that an egg does not get cold throughout, but also that it does not yet get too warm.

The chicks should hatch roughly at the same time. Yesterday night there was another surprise in the nest – a second egg! Altough Klaara has her nest already prepared for chicks, other tawny owls are still traipsing around in pairs and letting wedding bells ring.
