Waterfowl - coot

Coot family. Aardla polder.

A large number of waterfowl we only see during the migration periods in autumn and spring, but at least some stay with us to nest. One of them is the coot (Fulica atra), a bird with nice black plumage and a white forehead patch. The beak is similarly snow-white and so catches the eye, and makes the bird easy to recognize. Coots can be found in sea-bays as well as inland waters, with the tiny balls of down who will be able to fly in mid-July..
