The authors of the books below, Kuulo Kalamees and Vello Liiv, have brought Estonian mushroom field guides to a really respectable level. Everyone with a leaning towards forest rambles should carry a “mushroomer’s pocket guide“ in their pockets. A very good aid, particularly in view of this year’s cases of mushroom poisoning.

"400 Eesti seent – [400 Estonian fungi]" and "100 söögiseent – [100 edible mushrooms]": How long did it take to collect the photo material?
There is no precise answer to the question, because I didn’t collect material specifically for those books. The photos were made during a very long period. The oldest slide is nearly 40 years old. But the greater part of the material I have photographed during the last 10 years. At the time of publishing I still had quite few digital photos.
How rich, from a mycological point of view, is your home area Viidumäe?
I made my home at Viidumäe 25 years ago precisely because of the variety of species, but I think that even today the greater part has still not been determined!
Your favourite mushroom model?
It seems that I am the collector type, so each new find to add to the collection makes one happy - like a stamp collector. Of course there are mushrooms that I have photographed tens of times, to catch different stages of development, or hoping to get a higher-quality photo. I should mention that the primary aim of my mushroom photos is to show the characteristic traits of the species. The artistic value of the image comes in second place.
