This year the Winter White-tailed Eagle Feeding Ground Camera starts a little later than in previous years. The camera was installed on December 8, with the assistance of Tiit and Joosep, but we only managed to get the sound in working order in the new year, with the help of Beta Group.

The story and wow of nature photography

Today the first Estonian nature photography handbook, “Loodusfoto lugu ja lumm” (Nature photography: the story and wow), from publisher Varrak, will be on the bookshop counters. Authors are nature photographer Arne Ader and biology professor and internationally renowned nature photographer Urmas Tartes. The guide is lavishly illustrated and written as a handbook for all nature photo enthusiasts as well as for all who haven’t yet arrived at photographing nature.
 
In the authors' words the book deals with the classic themes of nature photography seen from a new angle. It focuses on the issue of how to capture an arresting story as well as enchanting beauty in a photo. Regardless of whether the photo enthusiast concentrates on close up photos or telephoto or ordinary photography, the authors argue for the need to tell a story in the image and to search for the moments when words are superfluous.

For photo enthusiasts who want to put theory into practice immediately an excellent opportunity is to take part in the master classes held by the authors of the handbook in Võrumaa. “We will talk about things that didn’t find room in the book, or that need and inspire discussions for understanding,” Urmas Tartes says about the background to the three-day photo course.
Arne Ader’s Master class, on the second weekend of January, focuses on the first two sections of the guide - "Loodusfoto mängumaa ehk mis on loodusfoto” (The playground of nature photo or what is nature photography) and "Tähelepanu lugu ehk kompositsiooniõpetus” (The art of attention or a composition guide). In Urmas Tartes’s Master classes, on the third weekend of February, lecture headings are "Lumekirbu lugu” (The springtail’s story) and "Sättimise lugu” (The art of camera settings I) and "Sättimise lugu II “ (The art of camera settings II).
 
Participants in the classes will be able to put lessons learnt from the lectures into practice at once, photographing winter nature in Võrumaa and analysing the photos in the class. The best photo will be selected at the end of the course and the author will receive a 500 EEK gift card donated by AS Overall Eesti, supporter of the master classes. The ten first participants who register for both master classes will receive the handbook "Loodusfoto lugu ja lumm" as a premium from the organisers.
 
The fee for the three-day photo school is 1750 EEK. A detailed programme for the master classes and other information is available on the website of the organiser, Viitina Loodushariduskeskus, http://www.viitinalhk.ee.
 
The nature photo handbook “Loodusfoto lugu ja lumm” will be presented on December 10, at 12 o’clock, in the Apollo book shop at Lõunakeskus in Tartu, and on December 11 at 15:00 in the Solaris Apollo bookshop in Tallinn.
