New Camera

This year the Winter White-tailed Eagle Feeding Ground Camera starts a little later than in previous years. The camera was installed on December 8, with the assistance of Tiit and Joosep, but we only managed to get the sound in working order in the new year, with the help of Beta Group.

The Bird Rarities Commission of the Estonian Ornithological Society has, after a pause, confirmed a long list of observations. Some of the more exciting sightings that were officially accepted were:

Red-crested pochard (Netta rufina) 23.10.-10.11.2009 at Orjaku, Hiiumaa; female adult (Jan Nordblad and others). An adult red-crested pochard has been observed at the Käina bay every autumn from 2006 onwards, and it isn’t impossible that the same bird has been observed all the time.

Eurasian spoonbill (Platalea leucorodia) 10.-13.12.2009 at Häädemeeste, Pärnumaa 1yr. (Aivo Klein and many others); it is the 6th observation in Estonia. A photo is here: PHOTO

Richard’s pipit (Anthus richardi) 22.-30.10.2009 Paljassaare, Tallinn (Ranno Puumets and several others). That a Richard’s pipit (niidukiur) stays in the same place for so long is a very rare thing. Many bongers managed to get the bird on their lists with little effort. Some photos are here: PHOTOS

Dusky warbler (Phylloscopus fuscatus) 29.11.2009 Põõsaspea neem, Läänemaa (Margus Ellermaa); the 8th observation in Estonia.

A list of all  observations that were confirmed by the Rarities Commission is on the EOÜ web site:
