Keen bird enthusiasts have noted that there are fewer waxwings than usual this winter. During the last week groups have been seen here and there in several places on the mainland, where they roam in flocks of ten to twenty or so from tree to tree in search of berries. In their nesting areas, the taiga and wooded tundra, waxwings gather in flocks when the cold period begins, and it is those birds that we meet here, coming southwards in search of food. The beautiful birds are winter birds here and don’t usually nest in Estonia. Generally the waxwings are passing through, as guests in rather low numbers during the cold period.
