Regardless of the iron grip of winter the birds are “on schedule”, at least our winter staying birds. The spring song of great tits has been heard; ravens have been seen flying around with twigs in their beaks.
Although the large nests of large birds carry enormous snow heaps and no repair work can really be done – you can’t even see what might be left of the nest – the lengthening of the days is a clear signal to the feathered community and lets loose a given behaviour. And the days aren’t far off when plant-pot farmers pile all their necessary seedlings in the window, even if frost reigns outside until spring. The sun sets its own times.
