Flycatcher story part IV

Building the nest

Early one morning the pied flycatcher lady sat on a twig outside the new nest box, with a dried leaf in her beak.

Agreement had been reached, and a decision taken about where to nest.

Building the nest is an important enterprise: so in the flycatcher family it is the task of the female bird only. On her mate’s part falls constantly driving off curious onlookers, singing beautifully and emphatically admiring his partner’s heroic efforts. The narrow entrance hole is secure and protects against invaders. But at the same time it can make nest-building quite complicated.
