Mushroom Week diary, part 2

Today we went to look for mushrooms in Paganamaa. It is pleasant enough to ramble around in the wooded hilllocks even without mushrooms. When autumn adds pretty mushroom caps to the forest floor then progress of course slows down. For every ten metres or so it becomes necessary to go down flat on the ground for photos - and another hour vanishes on photographing. This time I was stopped by the sheathed woodtuft (Kuehneromyces mutabilis). For once at least on a tree stump without saw traces! For the woodtuft photo I have used a digital depth of field extension technique – hard computer processing, but all done to present what was there more naturally to viewers.
And once you stop somewhere there is always something more to see. Near the woodtufts was a really tiny red cap. The experts quickly said, orange bonnet (Mycena acicula). In between the fronds of the wood moss it seemed so fragile, as if it were yearning for someone. They suited each other well.
Alder shelf fungus
But from Paganamaa there are only a few steps to abroad. So I too took a look at how our southerly neighbours were doing with mushrooms. They were doing fine. A vigorous alder shelf (Phellinus alni) grew on an alder trunk like a conquering hero. It seems that the Rõuge mushroom deluge has had mushrooms to spare for the neighbours too.
