New Camera

This year the Winter White-tailed Eagle Feeding Ground Camera starts a little later than in previous years. The camera was installed on December 8, with the assistance of Tiit and Joosep, but we only managed to get the sound in working order in the new year, with the help of Beta Group.

Two cameras – one on the ground near the feeding place and the other beside the perching tree – were started on November 16th, and the direct stream transmission went on until March 5th. At the end of the first week a heavy snowstorm hit the feeding grounds. The pine tree on one side of the aerial pushed it out of place and the connection was down for nearly one...

Interesting to see how forest inhabitants get on together. Yesterday roe deer visited the grounds but didn’t come “on stage” for the camera. For some days a helicopter has been circling near...

February is the last winter month for the white-tailed eagles who pass the winter in Estonia. At the moment two young and two adult birds are staying near the feeding ground.
If the adult birds are local eagles we may see them during the whole of February because the nearest known nesting site is only 5 kilometres from...

Yesterday, January 20th, Aivar sat concealed near the eagle camera blind and attempted to read the numbers on the sea eagles' bands. Altogether, there were at least six different sea eagles visiting the feeding site or perching in trees in the near vicinity. Represented were all of the old flock from the first winter (hatched in 2008) through the fifth winter's birds (hatched in 2004). Half were wearing Finnish bands. Like this first winter's young bird:

The band on the left leg (here coded A396) enables us to know the exact place of the eagle's birth. The band of the same color on the right leg shows us...

White-tailed eagle ringed in Jõgevamaa

On December 17 the ring numbers of a white-tailed eagle ringed in Jõgevamaa were read. Eagleman Joosep ringed the eaglets in the two-bird nest on June 15 2007. The bird seen on the feeding site in Northwest Estonia is sitting in the foreground. It was hatched 170 km away from the feeding grounds, but despite the short (in...

Eagleman Renno spent the whole of today in the shelter near the Eagle Webcamera to clear up the numbers and origins of the eagles visiting the feeding site. The day was successful, and the diary follows below:

8:40 – Tiit sets the table for eagles and other winged friends
8:45 – first ravens arrive
8:55 – sun should rise according to meteo information but the sky is cloudy …

The white-tailed eagle from Finland spent the whole morning sitting on the perch tree. Good observation point for what is going on, and getting to know local ways and habits. When you go home for the nesting, and others start asking about what it was like there in Estonia in the winter it is nice to have something to tell and even give a link, see for yourself ...
