New Camera

This year the Winter White-tailed Eagle Feeding Ground Camera starts a little later than in previous years. The camera was installed on December 8, with the assistance of Tiit and Joosep, but we only managed to get the sound in working order in the new year, with the help of Beta Group.

Group of adults with pups near the island of Ruhnu, discovered during an investigation flight.

Pack ice like this, far from the shore, is the best breeding place for grey seals. For breeding on ice they often gather in small groups.

In the beginning of April all grey seal pups have been born and have also become independent of their mothers. Now they only wait for the ice to break up.

Only yesterday the seal pup could still look out on a seemingly endless expanse of ice and peacefully slide down from a mound of ridged ice.

The winds from north and the sinking sea water level set the ice fields moving in the night, and with a rumbling sound of waves in early morning the sea announced that it was getting free from the ice.

Seal pup, a few weeks old

At the end of February the seal surveillance team went to see how things were with the seal pups. The first pups were born in the beginning of February, most of them before the cold put a lid on the West Saaremaa coastal waters.
Altogether there were 19 grey seal pups on the islet, the greater part one or two weeks old. The seals have kept a couple of holes open at the shore and use...

Things happen in the grey seal monitoring camera. Air temperature on the little islet is  – 4 degrees C, but with wind gusts up to 15 m/s. In the background is a white-tailed eagle pair that mated at 9.30 in the morning and for a second time some hours later. The eagles have spring in their hearts.

One adult white-tailed eagle had a totally lazy day on Wednesday. It settled in camera view at a quarter past ten in the morning and left towards evening, after having posed for six hours. It seemed that it was fully fed, there was substance to digest. For a few minutes a mate or lady friend visited, and of course crows gathered by and by in the camera area.
So they sit on the „perching trees“ of their territories – shoreline boulders and higher ice banks. Eagles perching...

The seal pups grow fast, the seal mum’s milk has 60% fat and compared to cow milk, three times the amount of proteins. A seal pup increases its weight by up to a couple of kilos per day when the birth colony is sparsely populated, as in our camera view. In a dense population there is more noise and disturbance and the increase in weight is a little smaller. The sucking lasted ten minutes.

Seal pup voices have been heard for a week. Today a couple of them came into camera view. They seem to be about a week old. Adult seals were visible on the ice; space for moving around is unlimited. Somewhere nearby they probably keep an ice hole open for getting into the water.

The storm has torn at the monitoring camera and made strange changes in the perspective. With the coming of the cold the solar panels were probably covered with ice glaze. The grey seals don’t like to climb across the ridged ice in front of the camera – they would lose their overview and the chance to watch out for dangers. Behind the ice ridge is a streak of open water: we will see how the winds and the frosts will behave. Seal pup voices have been heard.
