New Camera

This year the Winter White-tailed Eagle Feeding Ground Camera starts a little later than in previous years. The camera was installed on December 8, with the assistance of Tiit and Joosep, but we only managed to get the sound in working order in the new year, with the help of Beta Group.

Our thanks to Silvi and Peep who provided the extra food for our forest inhabitants in this  snowy and severe winter. Spring comes fast this year and the boar sows didn’t bring their piglets to the feeding ground for extra rations. After the snow has gone the forest offers enough to get by on. Foresters tell us that the sows have few piglets this year.
Thanks also to all watchers, the Looduskalender forum members who kept us posted on events and translators.

The faults have been found and repaired (March 29). Jaak Li from Infosüsteemid came to the feeding ground, the WIMAX transmission is their responsibility. Hopefully the image and sound is now a little better.
If a boar sow has piglets in the “nest“ then they won’t be brought out in the cold, and nobody has mentioned seeing little piglet tracks.

As the ground thaws the puddles on the feeding ground will disappear.

Yesterday night (Friday) interruptions appeared in the transmission from Forest Camera 2. We mapped the possible technical causes, and hope that the camera will work again on Saturday.

If it was hard work this winter to count the wild boar in camera view then now there is the same problem with counting the piglets. Peep enticed the sows to visit with corn.

Mama has brought her six offspring to see the local sights. It is worthwhile having the web camera open in the evenings; the voices of the piglets can be quite clearly distinguished.

Early spring is here, the snow in the forest is melting, in places the ground is quite suitable for rooting ...
The feeding ground guests have scattered, safe and sound, to their ordinary living places. Good that the winter could be spent here, cared for and watched over by people.

Peep and Silvi haven’t noticed during the years of feeding the animals that more boars than usual stay in their neighbourhood in summer. They grow potatoes and root...

Forest camera 2 watchers suspected already on Monday that they saw a boar sow with piglets. Five very young snouties were really there a quarter before midnight on Wednesday. But they were busy very far from the camera, as if avoiding to get in clear view.
Now we have to wait for some sunny days and hope that mama Boar will bring her offspring to enjoy the D vitamins in reach of the camera. The camera was brought a little lower, and the lighting adjusted. Darkness will show if it helped.

In the evening of February 26 seventy boars were eating.

Up to 70 wild boars show up for food in view of the camera at the feeding ground of Forest camera 2. The core flock, or sounder, has developed into a group of nearly thirty individuals.
Boars are omnivorous, but nuts and insect grubs are special favourites.

The birth period is beginning, and the...
