Long-eared owl (Kabli bird station 27.09.2012)

Today was a somewhat quieter day compared to yesterday at Kabli bird station, but more than 400 birds got rings on their legs. The great majority of the birds that got into the nets were goldencrests  (...

At the Kabli bird station a great milling broke loose at once in the morning. More than 800 birds got into the nets and the great bird trap during the day. All birds were ringed and could then continue their migration. The large majority of the birds were...

The weather forecast promised south-easterly winds on the south-western coast which should mean that many birds get into the nets of the Kabli bird station. A firm plan to go there for a few days to help with the ringing came about. But for today this favourable wind should start blowing only in the afternoon, and so I decided to spend the best observation period in the morning scoping again at the Lämmijärve in Mehikoorma. Teh weather was cloudy and visibility somewhat poor but I still succeeded to count 125 000 migrants (mainly chaffinches). This autumn nearly 3,5 million migrating...

September 22nd

In early morning the fog was thick on the eastern shore of Lämmijärve and there were clearly less bird movements than in the previous days. When the fog lifted the migration got going at full speed but we „only“ succeeded to count a little more than 140 000 migrants this day. In eight days 3,3 million birds have come across the Lämmijärve. Is the migration of chaffinches coming to an end for this time? Russia is large and wide, room for plenty of chaffinches there. Maybe another migration wave will come? As before the Mehikoorma observations can be seen in the...

Record day at Mehikoorma – more than 620 000 birds came across the Lämmijärve! The majority (>95%) of the migrants were still  chaffinches (Fringilla coelebs), but siskins (Carduelis spinus)(>8400) and wood pigeons (Columba palumbus) (>5700) were numerous too. In seven days at least 3,14 million migrant birds have been counted at Mehikoorma.

It was a slightly quieter day at Mehikoorma today, we managed to count altogether about 330 000 passerines. Only a week ago such a day would have caused  excitement for a long time but now we are already used to considerably larger daily totals and today seemed even a little boring. In six days at least 2,5 million migrant birds have come across the Lämmijärve, the great...

And once more at Mehikoorma to watch. Today a great milling started at once in early morning and during the day 530 000 migrants were counted, which is also the best number  that has ever been counted at Mehikoorma. In four days at least 1,75 million migrant birds have come across the Lämmijärve. The large majority of this mass are still...

At Mehikoorma again to observe. Today conditions for watching were clearly poorer than yesterday – cloudy and darkish in the morning, in between hot sunshine and the air shimmered, quite strong wind. But I still managed to count >400 000 passerines. During three days at least 1,2 million birds have crossed the Lämmijärve! The majority of the migrants...

Since a mighty passerine migration could be seen at the Lämmijärve shore yesterday we went again to Mehikoorma today. And we were not disappointed. More than half a million passerines took off from Cape Pnevo today to cross the lake! I have not had such a good migrant day even at Sõrve säär. The majority of the mass of passerines was of course chaffinches, but numerous thrushes, tits, wagtails, swallows were also on the move. At the tails of the passerines again a greater number of sparrowhawk and...

Although the weather was supposed to be on the poor side I still went to observe birds at Mehikoorma at Lämmijärve lake. The moderate adverse wind did not disturb the birds much and from Cape Pnevo a surprising number of passerines started to cross the lake. At times the whole sky was filled with dots. In the course of six hours I managed to count nearly 300 000 migrant birds. Because of the long distance (2 km) it was mostly not possible to determine the species but the majority of the migrants were probably chaffinches (Fringilla coelebs), in the throng were also many tits, thrushes, swallows, finches and smaller passerines....
