Again Brit I want to thank you for making all these links -- every day I read them (and vote for Ely in the town contest). I appreciate the work you do.

I also read the safari posts and pictures and enjoy them too.

Oh how terrible! I watched the night both little cubs were born & wondered then how Hope would react. She has been a good big sister to both of them. I had checked the bear page earlier tonight & was surprised to see there was no update for Monday. This explained it. I was so sad to learn the male cub died. Unfortunately, nature does not always proceed the way we would like, & I must remind myself at times that the animals I observe on the cams are not pets, but in their natural state. And death happens.

Thank you, Brit, for faithfully updating this forum each day.

I am more puzzled by the petty silliness of the DNR.

But is sounds, what with all the movement and the wolves, like their may have been some threat to Faith -- I hope she is okay.

This is another example of bureaucracies butting heads in a "turf war." :banghead: The Dep't. of Natural Resources, under pressure from the public as a result of Dr. Lynn Rogers' successful bid for support, has stiffened its neck & is determined that no one is going to push the DNR around. Especially not people who (in the DNR's view) have no idea what they are talking about & are just reacting to sentiment. I hope the public keeps up the pressure on them.

After reading the report Brit just posted above about the DNR confiscating all tissue samples & arranging for an autopsy by a vet they chose, I am hopeful that the final report will be complete & provided to Dr. Rogers. Scientists are obligated ethically to share results of any of their studies if requested to do so by another scientist, & that would certainly apply here.

I tend to think that this kind of behaviour is a sign of weakness. The DNR's goal should be to learn and the public good. They don't need to compete.

(I do suspect that L. Rogers has been a pain -- researchers frequently are)

It is really nice to hear that they saw Faith and that they left the bears alone.

(what with Jason's and the leopard's death and being blasted sick I did not want to deal with Faith having trouble.)

Link to Ely voting since for some reason it was left out of the update

:hi: Morning, Alice! You're right, researchers are frequently a pain. I am sure he has been a pain to them. He was sly like a fox when he realized what an asset he had in the huge mass of Lily & Hope fans. :whistling: I agree the goals are learning & the public good, & I hope some good comes out of the death of this bear cub.

(I hope you feel better, soon, Alice.)
