Stephen Jay Gould wrote a book titled >The Mismeasure of Man< castigating the so-called 'intelligence tests' meant to identify a point 'defining' the "I.Q" (or intelligence quotient of the individual tested- some had to knock 60 points off their scores in order to be a 'genius')
Since nobody has been able to agree exactly what"intelligence" is, increasing numbers of researchers are beginning to agree that perhaps it defines an organism's ability to adapt and survive. In essence, this places us below blue green algae and most bacteria. Certainly bird pedigrees go back to the rise of the Dinosauria. Now >Scientific American< delivered this to my inbox yesterday (had to read it myself since I gave my bacteria two days off to celebrate New Year) I hope you find it interesting.

Everyone suddenly turns out to be smart in their own field, pond or forest whatever.
You will find birds on page 4

Corvidderyck, the article is very interesting. Thank you.
I short quote from the page 4:.Far from being “birdbrains,” our feathered friends have displayed clever behaviors. Among birds, the largest forebrains are those of parrots and corvids (a group that includes crows, jays, ravens and jackdaws). Relative to body size, the brain of a parrot is as large as that of a chimpanzee, although, in absolute terms, it is about the size of a walnut. In recent years researchers have documented stunning cognitive abilities in these two groups of birds...

About Estonia's bird of year, 2009, Tawny Owl: Wikipedia has quite a lot, as usual http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tawny_Owl
Jo - I will have a look at the specifically Estonian bits & pieces about the tawny owl on the Bird of the year homepage.
Nice if we get some owls calls on the cameras!
The pitfalls of translations: tawny owl = kattuggla ("cat owl", literal transl.) in Swedish. But Estonian kassikakk (again "cat owl", literally) = the eagle owl . Still with me?
Happy New Year, everybody!

If anyone is feeling a bit chilly now, go over to Orange County, Califormia, to a webcam on a humming bird nest. Two new eggs have been laid on dec 30 and Jan 1

There are a number of excellent photographers in India. They have taken lots of pictures of the Greater Spotted Eagle

Thanks, bociany, for this link.
The photographs of Greater Spotted Eagles are awesome! I like to watch pictures of rare birds, especially those that I have a low chance to meet in live nature.

Here in British Columbia we are blessed to have a very healthy, large population of Bald Eagles. (Haliaeetus leucocephalus)
Late in the Autumn is the time when our wild Pacific Salmon leave the ocean and return to their spawning streams to reproduce and then die. Huge numbers of salmon travel up the Fraser River during this time. The dead and dying salmon are a critical source of food for the Bald Eagles and they congregate along the river to eat the feast of salmon.
Each year a festival is held to celebrate this magnificent display of nature. Hundreds of people gather along the River to watch the eagles and take pictures.
Also popular during the festival is a River boat 'Safari' or journey to see the eagles up close. Some of these Safaris have a guest speaker, Mr. David Hancock, who tells the guests all about what they are seeing.
Mr Hancock is of course the founder of the Hancock Wildlife Foundation which is where I volunteer my time to spread the word about our precious wildlife. On our forum you can find a place to talk about wildlife cameras from everywhere including the Boar and Eagle cams we have here.
I thought that you might enjoy watching a short Video that was taken on a Fraser River Safari. The trees are full of Bald Eagles.
Fraser River Safari to see Bald Eagles
Unfortunately I can not translate the speech in to Estonian for you... but if you are interested I can maybe write it out in English and maybe someone can translate it from there?
The first speaker is Jo-Anne Chadwick, who is an owner of the river tours company.
The man speaking is David Hancock.
I hope you enjoy it.

most wonderful pictures of mostly birds and the rest of wild life!
http://pewit.blogspot.com/2008_09_01_archive.html
but the reason why i found it, is Black Storks.
this picture was scary, especially now, when enormous wind generator parks are pushing themselves into Estonian landscape...
