Morning Drive 29 Feb
A very exciting drive -- some of the action was on camera, some was off.
The wild dogs (Sand Pack) made a kill (a young kudu) and then the hyena arrived. The kill was on Buffelshoek so sort of a long way off -- and there were 3 vehicles on the sighting already. When James arrived near the sighting he saw some young hyenas running in, including June. (but then James was allowd a little closer to see the hyena sighting) The hyena got most of the kill, we could hear them crunching bones. The wild dogs mostly sat and watched. Then a black backed jackal walked though. After a bit the dogs chased him off. Then most of the hyena left. Then one of the last hyena walked toward James with a kudu jaw in it's mouth, and then suddenly the wild dogs were there nipping at her. She sat on her rump, in the road, because the dogs were biting her rump. Then they all walked right past James, just in front of the car, too close to be seen (later James said the hyena thought about jumping on jigga to escape). Then hyena ran to a tree, backed into it -- so the wild dogs could only attack her from the front.
After a few minutes the dogs walked away.
James thinks this sighting will be available as a highlight and he made a 3d recording which will allow us to see the part that was too close for Brian's camera.
Everyone seems to think the hyena was Scarback, June's mother. I think she has a scar that looks like a 7 on her back. She seems very round, like she might be pregnant.
It was such a relief that neither dogs nor hyena was too badly hurt.
edit: -- I just looked at a family tree. It looks like Scarback may also be the mother of Teddy -- the cub from the previous drives.

I watched a video of Scott's close encounter -- that is too much.
And then I watched a video of Tira's close encounter. I think it is the same elephant. A big hole in the left ear and a tiny hole in the right ear.
They think he is just curious and interested, but he is too big for that.

That was a very close encounter and I did not understand, why Scott still didn't leave the Elephant alone but followed him to the mud hole where the 2nd and even closer encounter happened.
Scott and Nicki will be leaving, last day is Saturday and there willl be also a short firesid chat
