Halli brought a vole or a big mouse at 8.51.

Pruuni took it to the forest, chirping creefully. both are soaking wet.




Halli is staying, hopefully! in this weather leaving the egg alone would not be a good thing...

the weather does not inspire Halli to further decorate the nest, not even move much. he has changed position only once at 10.19 (if Pontu-pictures can be trusted).
poor Halli!
fortunately his upper feathercoat seems to be rather waterproof: big drops of water ran down his back when he got up and shook his head.

he rolled the egg after twelwe a couple of times. the egg looks quite intact and Halli has been lying still otherwise, not looking at the egg (nor listening to it). maybe tomorrow...


btw: not a single jay has been around this morning as far as i've seen or heard. maybe they don't like to fly in rainy weather either or they don't come as long as Halli stays out of their sight. maybe he really has provoked them on his trips outside of the nest and they've followed him here..?

EDIT: speaking of the devil! at 13.10 some buzzing voices started near the nest: a jay! Halli got up, shook himself, preened a little and rolled the egg again.

then he lay down, not paying any atttention to the buzzer, and put his head under the wing. quite soon the voice stopped and Halli is sleeping peacefully.
- i think it has stopped raining at about 1 pm.

Halli has got up and he is preening on the back branch, drying his feathers.

at 15.13 he hopped to the lower branch on the right...


... sat there a little while, said a few kaa's softly and then took off.

at 15.17 Halli is safely back.




it seems that he begins to sleep again.

Pruuni came at 15.28 and she talked softly with Halli.


then Halli took off and Pruuni stayed.


it seems that she began to sleep on her turn.
well, not quite yet after all. at 15.45:

before Pruuni came Halli was getting a bit impatient, waiting for Pruuni. he got up on the rim of the nest and looked in all directions to see if Pruuni would come. first right...


... then left...


... and then...

Halli was waiting for Pruuni to come from the left but she took him by surprise: she flew from the back and landed on the back branch.

it has become almost sunny now (but as a trade-off the wind has become hard and loud).

it's a beautiful but still a rather windy evening in the forest. Pruuni seems to be sleeping...

May 31st
good morning!
Pruuni has woken up for some times along the morning but she has begun to sleep again. ....
at 6.43 she had a little visitor who was not unpleasant.

now she is preening herself.....
at 6.55 she finished preening and said brrr. now she's looking around in the forest. i think she wouldn't mind if someone brought her breakfast.

at 7.02 Pruuni got up, had a look around the forest...


.... and flew off at 7.03.

two minutes later she returned quietly.


the landing could have been more stylish. i've seen better ones

i was away in the morning and found out from the Pontu-pictures that Pruuni had left the nest at 8.58, almost as soon as i had turned my back and left for shopping. i left the recording on so here's the clip.


she returned two minutes later, like from the earlier trip this morning. this time the landing was much better than earlier, almost perfect.

Halli came late today, at 12.12, to release Pruuni from her nest duty, but as compensation he brought a good-sized vole. Pontu picture shows them best: Halli has aimed his talons rigth under Pruuni's beak, but he hasn't even finished his landing yet when Pruuni has already grabbed the vole and is getting up to take off with it.


this time Pruuni didn't waste time in chitter-chatter, but got up and took off right away. maybe she was hungry: after all it was past noon.

after his arrival Halli turned the egg many times.

at 13.28 Halli even got up to preen on the side of the nest, but fianlly he returned on the egg. i think he has just been perky and active still. (edit: at about 13.50 he begins to look sleepy. )

still i haven't noticed any particular signs which would indicate that the hatching would be very near..
unless Pruuni's kick was meant to tell the egg "get youself under way, kiddo!"

the wind is so hard and loud that hearing any possible beeping from the chick is impossible.

Halli got up at 14.33, kaa'ed a lot on the rim of the nest and then took off.

at 14.36 he returned and he seemed to bring a ball of reindeer lichen.

at 14.40 he began to call again, got up, called some more and took off.

after that there have some some meow-like calls from far, but i don't know is it Halli or jays... (did he fly to their place to pick quarrel?).
he is still away...
edit: at 14.55 he is still away....

this is nerve-wrecking: the egg is still alone.


EDIT: at 15.30 still no-one home, just the egg.
