That sounds reasonable

It is, indeed, 'cause I read that in such years kainism happens among buzzards.

May 5th
good morning! :hi:

Pruuni is lying in the nest, not sleeping quite all the time, but most of it. it looks wet/humid in the forest. i think it has rained during the night.

a blue tit explored the nest and woke Pruuni up!

Beans I think they are really a great deal like our Red-tailed Hawks.

(even their cries seem similar --)

hello beans and welcome to the nest. :hi:

there was a visit at the nest but i'm not sure who was who...? :puzzled:
Image

i've thought all morning that it's Pruuni (female, the darker one) on the egg, but then an even darker bird came and stood on the rim of the nest for a while. the bird on the egg looked alarmed so i think the dark bird was an intruder!

the stranger looked a bit around and then it left. neither said anything.

It kind of looked like the bird on the nest was "hissing."

Maybe like LSEs, foreign buzzard females occasionally visit. Something to watch for, for sure. This is why it is so fantastic that someone is watching this nest regularly -- you can really see (understand -- as best as a human can) what is happening.

So Thanks Ame!

thanks, alice!
i'm not sure about the hissing, but it certainly did not look happy about the bird on the rim of the nest. Halli always gets a loud reception.

just after the strange buzzard a great tit passed by and disturbed Pruuni a bit. -i think it is Pruuni in the nest, and has been all morning. it looks dark enough and "multicoloured". this has been a very busy morning full of visitors!

i must have been mistaken about the stranger. a very dark bird came again to the nest at 10.05, just like earlier.
Image

Image

the dark bird said kaa-kaa a few times and this time the incubating bird got up (a little reluctantly though) and left. it must have been Halli after all. today he didn't leave before he was told to. :D

the dark one must have been Pruuni earlier and now. Pruuni then lay down.
i guess Pruuni wanted to replace Halli already earlier but Halli refused to leave.

now there were still rustles in the tree above the nest. maybe Halli was loitering there for a while before taking off.

maybe Halli has moods that change from day to day. yesterday he didn't feel like staying and sneaked away from his nest duty. today he felt like staying and when Pruuni came she had to practically kick Halli out of the nest.
lucky for the egg that the jay didn't come and check the nest yesterday!

but boy are they difficult to tell apart! :slap:
Halli looked so dark in the cloudy weather. -i have no idea of when they changed places this morning and i was around (at least on a hearing distance) almost all the time since 7.

i checked from Pontu pictures when the change-over has taken place: it was at 6.21. there the both parents are in the nest.
http://pontu.eenet.ee/saunja/2012-05-05 ... -06-21.jpg

a fire engine or a police car with sirens on drove by at 10.38 and a second one at 10.43.
