Dima дима, we have no information of when the camera will start again. :dunno:

i have been thinking that maybe we have luck later in the winter when firm ice has formed. then it is easier to get to the island than in a boat. but this is not enough i think: we shall have to wait even longer till the seal mothers have left their pups on the island and have swam away. then it will be possible to go there, not earlier. (edit: i'm reading the first forum pages now. it seems that mother seals still came ashore to feed their babies.)

the seal camera started that way for the first time on March 7th 2009.
viewtopic.php?f=19&t=81
i think aita found some time ago the video which showed how the camera was set up on the island. there were seal pups all over the place under bushes and between rocks. :D they were already mostly grey (not baby white any more) and they hissed and growled at the people who were pointing their camera on them. :rotf:

so my guess is that it will be March when we get the camera back (if we get it back at all...)

... i'll try to find that video again... just a minute.

i found another video which was in Estonian news, in the website of newspaper Postimees on March 9th 2009:
http://www.reporter.ee/2009/03/09/vilsa ... rekaamera/
the title says: the first seal camera in the world has started in Vilsandi.
:D

now i found the videos i was looking for:
http://www.looduskalender.ee/en/node/2926
i remembered a bit wrong: some of these videos were made later, in the beginning of April. then the sea was already open and seal mothers had left.

you will need VLC-player or some other videoplayer to view these videos. tell me if you can't see them and i'll make copies of them and post the Y-tube links here.

i made Y-tube videos of these clips and i'll post them here, though they can be seen on the Seal cam news page, too. be careful with the volume of these videos: some have very loud noise!

i noticed that i remembered wrong the ice situation in the beginning: the sea was open already on March 8th 2009 when the camera had opened.

2014 Animal of the year
goes parallel to the "Year of the Gulf of Finland", and so for Estonia has to do with the project on the Ringed seals' population along the coast.
Fingers crossed that Ivar & Mart will be able to reach the webcam site before winter comes to an end...

The camera was offline for a long time, but today finally it started to stream again!
As it is a new year we have started a new topic for the seal cam for 2014: viewtopic.php?f=19&t=647
“One can measure the greatness and the moral progress of a nation by looking at how it treats its animals” (Mahatma Gandhi)
"You can judge a man's true character by the way he treats his fellow animals" (Paul McCartney)
