The same pictures I saw in Latvia three weeks ago: white storks in the nests, on the fields, in the sky - everywhere, but last Sunday most of those nests were empty and only a few birds left.

Well,Ricky :hi:
The WS do that here in Alsace too. They follow the tractors and harvestors looking for 'nice' things to eat, not a bit afraid of the machines.
Thanks for the photos :2thumbsup:

Don't remember if sent already that link somewhere in Forum, but:

http://picasaweb.google.com/margomg/MustToonekurg
http://picasaweb.google.com/margomg/Mus ... 3906480514

there are some images and a video about juvenile BS from Latvia (ringed by my colleague Maris Strazds, in NE Latvia). That bird has chosen wrong direction and stops for couple of weeks already near Tallinn in Raasiku. And is not at all shy...

Other juvenile from Latvia, probably from the same nest - was found dead (with broken leg) on coast of Lake Peipsi.

I have seen such a report, last year, I think, that black storks, just fledged, have no sense of danger. They don't - can't - know that this nice track or road is there because of traffic, and vehicles are big and fast.
Imagine yourself driving a vehicle and being unable to stop in time to avoid a black stork. It would break my heart!

Besides they peck and eat anything, even something unedible or poisonous, because nobody teaches them what they can eat and what they can't.

Thank you, Carmel.
It was so good to see Padis again! The "bald" head, the ring on the left leg. Toomas is so different. So when one of them returns to that nest, we should be able to say who it is.
Didn't Urmas say that Toomas has a ring now?

Urmas said that Toomas has got a transmitter, so we can recognize him at once.

'Oh dear... in Raasiku? So close! :shake:

It was great to watch the storklet, such a beautiful bird! And scary too, poor chick, alone and lost in this dangerous world...
I hope he/she finds the right direction to Africa.

That makes me really curious - will we get the news about his travels? Where has he been all the summer?

Did you pay attention that some stork nests are "double", one nest is built on the other, like here, for example:
Image

Why do storks build such nests?

I have never seen a picture of such a nest .... thank you, asteria :2thumbsup:

Perhaps those storks are overachievers? Or they are covering up an old nest that belong to another pair of storks?
