Think, the BSs can fly at night, but they don't prefer flying at dark time. Hundreds of data days of transmitters show very few movements at night. But exceptions could happen, for example if they are disturbed at night.

Black Storks and storks en general in old biblical texts : I found some intersting pages. In Bible storks are mentioned several times.

(I didn't know where to put these links.. but let them be here so far..)

http://net.bible.org/dictionary.php?word=Stork

cite: Hebrew hasidah, meaning "kindness," indicating thus the character of the bird, which is noted for its affection for its young. It is in the list of birds forbidden to be eaten by the Levitical law (Lev. 11:19; Deut. 14:18).

cite:Two species are found in Palestine, the white, which are dispersed in pairs over the whole country; and the black, which live in marshy places and in great flocks. They migrate to Palestine periodically (about the 22nd of March). Jeremiah alludes to this (Jer. 8:7).

cite, more explications on Black storks: There is a smaller stork having a black neck and back, that homes in Palestine, but only in small numbers as compared with the white. These birds flock and live in forests around the borders of waste and desert places, and build in trees. The young of both species remain a long time in the nest and are tenderly cared for, so much so indeed that from their performances and love of building on housetops arose the popular tradition that the stork delivers newly born children to homes. The birds first appear in Lev 11:19 and Dt 14:18. Jeremiah noticed that the stork was migratory; see 8:7: "Yea, the stork in the heavens knoweth her appointed times; and the turtle-dove and the swallow and the crane observe the time of their coming; but my people know not the law of Yahweh." The Psalmist referred to their nesting in the cedars of Lebanon, for in Palestine these birds could not build on housetops, which were flat, devoid of chimneys and much used by the people as we use a veranda today; see Ps 104:17:
------

Mentioning in other old texts:

In Bible, in ancient Egyptian, Chinese, etc, India..

The Minerva Britanna project, on storks

This is a story about a White Stork, and a man in Romania who rescued her.
A friend in Canada sent me this scan of a page from a "Reader's Digest."

Click the picture twice to see the full size and read the story.

An article published by the Naturalist Daniel Daske in our local newspaper today.See in French on http://www.lalsace.fr
He talks about the big differnce between BS and WS in that the BS is so discreet and shies from human contact. He published a photo taken on the river Thaya on the border between Austria and Cheki of a BS keeping out of public view in the river.
From Hardegg one can go to the nearby Nat Park in Tcheki, where two evenings in a row they saw a BS fishing in that river. This park is large, protected,of International
importance. DD managed, however to take a few pics. They then took him into the forest and under a 'Pin Sylvester' they could make out,at a great height an important nesting area...."With one adult BS mounting the garde"But very quickly,in spite of very strong binoculars the BS quickly camafluged himself amongst the branches.
Two storks, one white, the other black. One who will show himself, the other will hide.
This BS merits some study.
Mentions the visit of a BS to our local Zoo/bio. garden where the director took a photo.
So, all we have to do is fly off to Cheki........and,even then... :innocent:

I don't know where to put this,or even if its of any intrest to anyone, but they do include a report on Matsalu Nat. Park Estonia:
http://www.coe.int/t/dg4/cultureheritag ... e18_en.pdf
'our' (see above) Daniel Daske is apparently part of this convention.

Another story about a white stork receiving an artificial beak.

Hungarian stork gets a new beak

Tamas Kothay made an artifical beak for the stork out of synthetic resin

A stork with a damaged beak has been given a new, artificial one thanks to experts at a bird hospital in Hungary.

The stork damaged its beak in an accident and was taken to the Hortobagy Birds' Hospital, 180km (111 miles) east of the capital Budapest.

The bird's lower beak was repaired in an operation and Tamas Kothay, a specialist in dental prostheses, built a new top beak out of synthetic resin.

If the bird makes a full recovery it will be released back into the wild.

Dr Deri Janos, who helped in the one-hour operation to fix the top beak, said the stork had probably broken its beak by flying into a wall.

They believe the bird is about three years old.

Without the operation it would have needed hand-feeding for the rest of its life and would have been unable to return to the wild.

The bird hospital has been in operation since 1991 and has returned about 40% of its patients back to the wild.

Thak you, bociany. Clever things are being done nowadays, for damaged birds. It's always good to learn about it.

I hope that stork is able to be independent for life now.
