Olga, the tassle, I think you are right. It looks as if only the female has that, or at least more clear than with the male.

I am only almost sure.. Well, I believe that males too have that ability, to push up the head feathers (on the back part of the head.. what's the right translation of 'takaraivo' occipital says google - sounds strange to me..).

For the moment ( at 18:11 and 18:16)I think there is Tiina.

I took two pics of the 'tassle'..

Then I have been waiting to see the tassle again, but no, now it is not seen anymore..

18:28, she looks sleepy (or he!! ).. We will solve this mystery sooner or later

I wonder why we did not notice this tassle on Padis and Donna?

The bone at the back of the head is the occiput, so the adjective is occipital. Quite right, Olga.

Next question - do storks have a similar bony distribution to humans? I recall discussions of tibia-fibula, tarsal bones in earlier years. (Storks, that is, not humans)

There was some kind of little tassel. I have to reveal why I can say it.. :D I knitted a small black hat (and put some black sequins in it), and then: I was sure that there has to be some kind of small 'knob' on the back upper part of the crown!! (I dont know anymore where my stork hat' is . I didn't finish it, be cause I could not decide if I should knit a red beak on it, too..it could have looked too silly on my head with that beak)

This page has a description of a stork skeleton. The head is referred to only as "the skull", having no bony divisions.

Yes, I have to ask them to find it out! It is somewhere! It was for two years ago when I made it. I have not thrown it away .. the sequins are rare, they reflected rain bow colors even though they were black!

She (he?) is sleeping still..

The stork brooding the eggs at the moment has a darker area on her/his beak. If we can find out which is which we can use that to identify them?

If I had to guess? This one, with the darker area on its beak, I think may be Tiina. Urmas, can you help us?

A lovely, serene view of the nest. It will be dark soon.

My opinion, that now Tiina (female) came to nest.

No, Juta. No idea!

But I think that Tiina with the Tuft has just taken over brooding duty at 22.09
The departing adult seemed bigger, had a longer beak with a dark area in the middle.

Last time we watched Black Storks, was it male or female who spent more nights on the nest?

The male has arrived on the nest and they have 'chatted' together. :D
Tina is arranging the nest material now and the male has left....I think.. :puzzled:

Sorry if I am absent..I am on Grannny duty.

There seems to be a general consensus about gender, now. Tiina is on the nest - several of us have said so.

I think we should wait until almost dark. I am sure female will sit on the nest and male on the branch as it was yesterday evening.

Just guess... :D
