How do they know that the parent is coming - they start making noises long before the parent appears ?

Hello!
So some people have asked news about storklet Lenny... there haven't been any major events to report about.
With wildlife, even when they are treated and rehabilitated, we minimize contacts whit us and other people. We don't want them to get habituated or imprinted to us, that would make our patients dysfunctional for nature, so we don't spend time watching them or petting ect. For rehabilitation to be deemed successful, these released animals must be able to truly function as wild animals. This includes being able to recognize and obtain the appropriate foods, select mates of their own species and reproduce, and show the appropriate fear of potential dangers (people, cars, dogs, etc.). Basically I come into contact whit my patients when I need to perform some procedure. All the other time they are left undisturbed, so they could rest and not be stressed by our company. We as people need to remember that we still are predators for all of the truly wild species and too much love can kill (or damage severely).
Its not easy to reach such goals but if we want to release animals who are able to function properly, we need to be pretty knowledgeable and strict in our procedures.
With best regards,
Dr. Madis

Dr. Madis, thank you for your "hands off" care of the young black stork.
Your comments also help members to deal with the apparent problem in the Estonian LSE nest.

I take Dr. Madis' report as indicating that his hope is like our own. That the bird will be successfully rehabilitated and returned to the natural world...SelbyLowndes

21:01 Something invisible in the camera scared the storklets seriously, and they immediately launched their "deterrent system", which proved to be effective. Perhaps it was a big bird, which sat on a nearby tree?
