Re: Lesser Spotted Eagle Webcam Discussion

Post by Olga »

These are my only pics of today. Eha and both chicks on the nest in the rainy morning at 10:42.

I hope the weather will get better from tomorrow..What can we humans do else? It's better to know what is the reality for them in this case. We have to be happy Eha and Koit are not the last LSEs in Estonia what ever it will happen from now on.. ( I don't remember how many pairs there are supposed to exist, but it can't be said it is 'alarming'.. what was the word Urmas used :puzzled: I will follow the life of Eha and Koit and the chicks such as it is day by day.

I was off from the afternoon to the evening.

What is even more perplexing is why the younger chick does not fight harder.

This paper is very interesting! Yarko posted the link yesterday. I think we are seeing a textbook example (hard as it is to watch, it exactly what this species does).

http://www.raptor-research.de/pdfs/a_sp ... ainism.pdf

Cainism, nestling management in Germany 2004-2007 and satellite tracking of juveniles in the Lesser Spotted Eagle (Aquila pomarina)
Meyburg, Graszynski, Langgemach, Sommer & Bergmanis
Slovak Rapt J 2008, 2:53-72
... there is a great deal of aggression between the young birds, even on the part of Abel, THis leads to fights between the chicks in which one of them soon gains the upper hand and intimidates the other. THis consent, by the weaker, to being bullied leads to the death of one of the nestlings, even when there is no difference in size (demonstrated by bringing together two young eagles of equal size in experiments). The weaker young eagle hardly has the courage to take part in feeding (citations not copied). Food availability is however of no significance at this stage ...

Cainism is prevalent in a lot of other raptor species (e.d., the Bearded Vulture, many eagle species) and other bird species such as Cranes, Cakatoos[sic[ etc.Under the Aquila eagles it is most pronounced in Verraux's Eagle (A. verrauxii), the largest species. THere is yet no agreement among experts as to why two eggs are laid, which as a rule leads to only one young bird fledging, or the significance of cainism in terms of evolution (citations not copied).

Spot sen. was holding the little Spot jun. in a wrestling headlock, little ones head under the arm, Spot jun tried to fight out but Spot Sen. has taken some Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu behind mummy's back .
Yes Kenny Its CATCH-ATTACK with an armlock .
I have seen this behaviour on the American Baldeagles nest recently but they eventually settle things out and in the end both got food although in different times (usually when the 'strong' one has had enough to eat, then its more easy for the 'little' to step in and eat, finally).
As they have had little food so far its different............for now.
Here's hoping.

its head-lock
look headlock:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Chris ... adlock.jpg

armlock is a single or double joint lock that hyperextends, hyperflexes or hyperrotates the elbow joint and/or shoulder joint.

Imagesorry i had to argue my point.

5:35, Koit arrived and brought a frog ? to Eha. Chicks are still asleep.
5:42, Eha is back sleeping but somebody is chirping real loud - is it Spot 1 ? No, it was Eha herself.

06:04 Feeding??? I am not sure what Eha found, or if she is even feeding, but she moved something, and then had her back to the camera for several minutes.

Was there another food drop off? Something on the nest looks like a birds claw.

I was just watching Eha feeding the Spots and Spot 1 was not so much interested in the food as pecking away at Spot 2. it was quite heart-breaking to watch, I think it's pretty obvious what will happen soon...
