Lesser Spotted Eagle (Aquila pomarina)

This eagle is the most numerous eagle in both Europe and Estonia. Of all our eagles, the Lesser Spotted Eagle is the only one who has adjusted to the human cultural environment, but he still requires uncut forests for nesting and mowed meadows for food. The older birds' plumage is various shades of brown; young birds are more or less covered with light spots with legs feathered to the toes. (quoted from http://www.looduskalender.ee/en/node/158)

Last season, the pair on this nest did not produce eggs or young ~ we hope the 2009 season will be successful.

Picture is from May 12, 2008

The microphone on this system picks up many noises that sound much closer than they actually are. There is a road about 200 m away and a railway about 3 km from the nest.

06:16 The first eagle gave a few calls, and the second eagle arrived (I did not get pictures :puzzled: and the ones I did get are blurry - the cam stream was coming in slowly.)

First eagle left, with something in its beak -perhaps the second had brought a food offering. The second eagle stood around for a moment, then left.

06:20 Both returned.

06:22 One in nest, one took off from a branch in the back

06:23 Eagle returns, but leaves again after a few seconds. The one in the nest is arranging branches

07:00

One eagle has been sitting in the nest for at least half an hour. Sometimes preening, or snoozing, or calling

07:15 Other eagle arrived -this one is the darker of the two. They exchanged places and the dark one is squawking and arranging branches.

The one with the Lighter head is on left,

07:20 Lighter one is back with a branch. Darker one leaves.

07:23 L-one flies to branch to the right, behind the nest. Leaves after a few seconds

Lighter one has a higher pitched squawk - is this the female?

Yes, that is my understanding of it, bociany. The female is larger and lighter in colouring than the male.
He is smaller, sleek, well groomed looking, with deeper, brighter colours on legs and beak, and slightly darker plumage. It helps to see both together!

Do they have names???

I found this from last year:

Both eagles in the nest

08 June 2008.
Sunday morning I opened my browser to the eagles' nest and received a wonderful surprise—both birds were in the nest. It didn't last long since the female bird flew far and then called. The male (he has a light brow stripe near his eye) tried to call her back but this wasn't to be… A lost tail feather remained in the nest.
