Re: Lesser Spotted Eagle Webcam Discussion
Found article about Sibling Aggression and Siblicidal Tendencies in Birds
There are several hypothesis about such behaviour:
- food amount hypothesis
- prey size hypothesis
- brood size hypothesis
- challenge hypothesis;
- also about The Role of Parents in Siblicidal Aggression.
it's here: http://209.85.129.132/search?q=cache:9A ... clnk&gl=ee

It has been a trying time for us all.

Poor, poor tiny spot...good that it`s suffering has ended.
although i understand the reasons of the behavior of big Spot,
think it will take some time to be able to watch him/her calmly and with sympathy...

Even for me, and I think he is the cutest thing with two wings.Kuremari wrote:Poor, poor tiny spot...good that it`s suffering has ended.

On his first day, first feeding he was lunging for the food and clacking at Eha's beak and watching around in a way that seemed different than Sulli and Kluti. So I think he is a adorable, but I can't help thinking he is a little bit of a fiend!

Alice, I think you have described him very well!
He came out of the shell ready for a fight!!
Watching him (her?) is going to be so different from Sulli and Kluti, who seem gentle and well mannered, by contrast.
Fiend - yes!

Yes, I have seen that on most eagle nests that I watched, but they don't all kill each other!asteria wrote:Sulli attacked Kluti first days(when the eaglets did not have names yet).
LSE is very deternined to do that.
Question for Urmas -
When can we see a Golden Eagle nest, or a Greater Spotted eagle nest?
Are there any suitable for webcam fixing and viewing?

Thanks for telling us.ergee wrote:ct 20.17 Eha grabbed Spot 2 out of the nest..what now?? Is he really dead now
and going to be food for Spot 1..?
Poor, poor Spot 2, now it is definitive over. Hardly 5 days old , 5 most miserable
and painfully days.
May he fly to the birds-heaven!
Poor little one - just hatched and died a few days later. A short and painful life it was. I´m glad that the pain for the little Spot is over now. But he/she continues living in Spot sen and Eha now. Nothing gets lots in nature. His/her death makes other life possible.

A fresh start
It would be very interesting to see a Golden Eagle nest.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_Eagle
There is a picture of a nest (at about the middle of the page). To me it looks like a typical Golden Eagle nest -- I think it might be hard to get cams on them. Where I live Bald Eagles are pretty common. Last year I even laughed at myself for shooing at a Bald Eagle flying over my house -- I was thinking of my cats! But for me Golden Eagles are a rare and exciting thing to see.

A cyber-friend of mine is a professional researcher who studies nutrition in hatchlings - mostly she studies birds who eat insects, but she also watches raptors a little.Ricky wrote:Poor little one - just hatched and died a few days later. Her beautifully stated philosophy is just as Ricky posted. She wrote to me today:
" ... the nutrients from what is gone (be it egg or chick) is converted to growth, and the one truly lives on in the other. It is perhaps difficult for humans to accept, but this cycle is indeed 'life everlasting' and very beautiful."
Now, while it is painful to consider the specific actions involved in propelling this cycle forward, there is much comfort for me in thinking about it in this spiritual - as well as scientific - way.

The only camera that I know of that is focused on a Golden Eagle nest is in Finland. There is one eaglet there this year, it hatched around May 13.Jo UK wrote:Question for Urmas -

I think understanding is the keyword after today's -
and bociany's friend's words are something that make understanding a bit easier!
I also think that we can't just forget and erase what happen - it's part of that nest's life. Maybe attempt to understand will be better than just forgetting?
Yes - watching live webcams and watching Disney Nature movies isn't the same... no one can actually quarantee 'happy endings' here.
----------------------------
But - Spot is full of life and it has devoted parents -
it is privilege to observe it's developing from small fluffy thing to brave young eagle!

5:20, Eha has the Spot covered and sleeping.

05:37 Eha feeds Spot
Sometimes she did not feed fast enough, and Spot lunged at the prey item:
Eha herself ate a couple of prey items - swallowed them whole. Perhaps Spot wanted more than he got in this feeding.
06:00 Eha is back to sleep, with head tucked in.
