Hi Alice, I've been watching from 7 o'clock our time. She has been calling, but I've seen no food been brought in either.

Urmas posted -

Not often the LSEs bring food during a rain, but today it seems to rain whole day:
http://www.emhi.ee/index.php?ide=19,394,416,1183

so maybe Remo checked that out and decided not to wait for so long...

And frogs, you know, like rainy weather. Though there are observations, that LSEs have lost an ability to fly, because of hunting during a rain in the high grass... Hope Remo will rather wait for better hunting conditions!

Interesting observation by jopie -

Back again, and I did not hear something being brought.

Tuuli almost seems to be in a trance, very shallow breathing and moving as little as possible, saving energy, so as not to become too hungry?

Also from bea
Hi Jopie,

I also thought about Tuuli so motionless during rain - saving energy could be one thing and another one to keep the upper feathers closed, so that the rain can pearl down on them like on a coat and will not arrive in the feathers closer to the body ....

at 15.55 the rain stopped. Lussi05 got this pic of the effective protection an adult bird gives to the eggs. Such a difference between wet and dry parts.
15:55 :hi:
Poor Tuuli, she really looks miserable. Now she just got up an left the nest.
Eggs home alone..

Estonian LSE (BS)
May 16 contd.

Question from Jopie :
Urmas, or anybody else who knows, how do LSE hunt? Do they catch frogs for instance while flying or do they walk at that moment?

Answer from Felis silvestris

Today I printed the Wikipedia articles on the LSE and the WTE. The German Wiki article has a chapter on hunting and nutrition. It says, that LSE have 3 methods to hunt: they hunt by walking, from a raised hide and by search flight. The article says, that LSE are known for their hunting by foot, where they walk on meadows and harvested fields, like the (white) stork. For the hunt from a raised hide they use lower look-outs like hay stacks, fences or trees. The search flight is from a low level and the eagle is circling convenient areas.

Answer from Urmas:
Thats right! Additionally they can hunt in woods, perching on trees. It is difficult to observe, therefore not well known.
