Estonian LSE nest (BS)

June 23

Again, it was a wonderful day at the LSE nest. Remo brought a lot of prey, it is clear he has a routine: in the morning he brings the most prey and late in the afternoon, most times he brings 1 or 2 prey again.

Image

Tuuli is getting more relaxed leaving Tormi alone for a while. Today she had several time-outs, one of which took more than half an hour.

Tormi produced its first pellet. It took a while before he/she could get rid of it

Image

And at last I could capture one of Tormi's many squirts. :rotf: Most times he is too quick or I am too quick taking the picture.

Image

The amount of food for Tormi is getting larger every day, also the size of the chunks which Tuuli tries to feed him are getting larger. At the end of the feeding there is this large balloon hanging under Tormi's chin/beak.

Image

The weather was nice with a very strong wind, but no rain. Tuuli is just back from her "round in the neighbourhood" and Tormi was happy to crawl under her warm belly again.

Today Tormi is 14 days old. She is growing fast and since today trying to copy what her mother does. She pulls at twigs, cleans her feathers when Tuuli cleans her feathers and this afternoon she tried to make sounds just the same as Tuuli, not so loud but the same amount and tone. Also Tormi's tailfeathers are starting to be visable, very little stubs. And just now Tormi did her "business" for the first time at the edge of the nest, walking backwards to it. Many developments today.

Remo brought several kinds of prey. Tuuli's favorite this morning, which she reluctantly shared with Tormi: a frog

Image

Tuuli took several times away from the nest, one time even a whole hour. When she came back she was very wet at her legs and breast and the sides of her wings.

Image

She started feeding Tuuli, who was hungry, and at that time Remo came with a large prey, almost looked like a rat

Image

The sun started to shine in midday and soon it became too hot for Tormi, who tried to crawl into the shadow at the rim of the nestbowl

Image

When Tuuli suddenly flew away it startled Tormi so much that she almost fell backwards

Image

Tuuli still cares for the egg, not so intense as in the beginning, but she rolls it and keeps it covered

Image

Tuuli was away just now when it started to rain. Luckily Tuuli is back again. It still rains; the wood is rather quiet, not many singing birds about.

A rather quiet day at the LSE nest today, no rain, no sun, no wind for a change.
Remo delivered several little mammals, in general large ones and a medium sized frog also:

Image

Tuuli is caring for Tormi very much, the only strange thing is that Tuuli wants to cover Tormi with twigs all the time, and not when she leaves the nest, but at various moments:

Image

Tormi is becoming beautiful and still grows and grows. Since today every time she needs the "toilet" she walks backwards to the rim of the nest.

Image

Image

Tormi has just been fed, is now sleeping while Tuuli preens her. Birds are singing around them and all is well.

It was beautiful weather today, many times the sun shone, and no wind untill the afternoon.
Plenty of food was brought in by Remo

Image

several large voles and even Tuuli brought a frog with her after she had been away.
Alone in the nest like this, Tormi is still only a very small bird, only 16 days old today.

Image

Tormi grows really fast and showed us the beginning of her wing feathers today

Image

And a few minutes later she unfolded her left wing and showed the beginning feathers at the end of it.

Image

Tuuli preens Tormi a lot and still likes to have her underneath her breast

Image

And imitating Tuuli, Tormi also is a very keen preener him/herself

Image

Right now they are both sleeping and all is well. Remo just brought another vole to the nest.

It was a strange day, Remo brought several prey, nothing strange about that, but Tuuli seemed to have forgotten about Tormi totally. In the morning she was a long time away and Tormi could not eat the food Remo brought, of course.

He tugged at the frog which Remo brought but could not do anything with it
Image

At the end of the morning Tuuli left the nest and did not come back for nearly 5 hours!

Leaving Tormi struggling avoiding the sun, of which she/he definitely did suffer.
Image

Coming too close to the edge of the nest several times, trying to find a way to get away from the sun.

Image

Tuuli came back bringing a large Aspen twig and immediately started to feed Tormi, who seemed to be hungry enough. Tuuli literally stuffed Tormi, never saw its crop more swollen

Image

And making up for lost time by "scraping" with her beak at Tormi's head after finishing feeding and Tormi came to rest cosy lying against Tuuli's breast again. (translated the situation as a human being  )

Image

Right now Tuuli is turning the egg, Tormi makes little beeping sounds, birds are singing, the weather is still beautiful and all is wel.

P.S. And now I almost forgot the most important thing: to post a picture of Tormi's number 1 feature: her tail. Isn't it a beauty?

Again a beautiful sunny day at the home of the LSE family. Tuuli was less undomestic than yesterday. She went away several times but also came back, to feed and to shield Tormi.

Image

Because Tuuli is not there all the time, the feedings are almost too extreme in quantity. When Tormi has had enough sometimes a very large crop can be seen

Image

Remo brought a vole and 2 large frogs, and Tuuli brought several frogs into the nest.

Image

Sometimes Tormi tries "to open" a prey, when she is alone, like this frog, between her paws.

Image

Tormi suffered from the sun, and tried to find some shadow, again at the very rim of the nest and again it is very unnerving to watch.
First she tries to cope with the warmth by spreading her wings
Image

then follows the search for shadow.

Image

Luckily Tuuli came back to the nest. She did not spread her wings to shield Tormi, but her body created enough shadow.

Image
Just now Tuuli came to the nest with a vole and is feeding Tormi and all is well.

June 29

Again a sunny day at our nest.
Tuuli and Remo seemed to have come to some kind of schedule regarding the care of Tormi: Remo was at the nest almost all morning and Tuuli took a few hours during midday.
Both hunt, but today Remo brought the most prey. Several large voles, a very small mouse and 2 birds, of which the first must have been dead for some time, because it was mostly bones and no feathers or skin at all.

First bird in the morning
Image

Image

Second bird in the afternoon
Image

With both parents Tormi has to take care for her staying out of the sun herself. Neither parent protects her against it.

Tuuli watching over Tormi
Image

Remo at the nest with Tormi
Image

One strange thing occured, Tormi pecked Tuuli at the head at one time. It seemed because Tuuli refused to take Tormi underneath her, but I do not believe that myself  It happened also when Tormi was very little but then it looked like Tormi could not see proper yet and expected food to be there.

Image

It is nice to see the result of Tormi's feeding right away, she starts feeding with a flat crop and when she is finished it looks like this:

Image

Image

Image

Maybe too many pictures today, but it was a remarkable day. So many things are happening and Tormi changing so rapidly; Tormi also stood on stretched legs for the first time today. I had to restrain myself or would have put in much more pictures.
Just now Remo brought another large vole, Tormi is sleeping flat out while Tuuli stands over her. Birds are singing nearby and all is well.

P.S. And just now, at about 22.00 hrs. Tuuli pressed the egg between her paws and cracked it. Both Tuuli and Tormi ate the contents of the egg.

About the same day as yesterday as far as the weather was concerned: dry and sunny, only today with a stronger wind.
Remo and Tuuli followed about the same schedule as yesterday, except now it was Tuuli during a couple of hours in the morning and Remo during midday and afternoon looking after Tormi.

Tuuli with Tormi

Image

Remo brought the most prey: a large mole and a frog and some voles.

Remo did especially well with Tormi: excepting her crawling into the shadow his body created, and only drewing back when Tormi came too close.

Image

Image

First picture of Tormi standing with stretched legs. She did it once before, but there was too much sun then.

Image

Remo came to the nest with a mole who was alive, and it did not surrender very easy

Image

At several places in the nest Remo pressed with both talons at the mole but several times it escaped and eventually it ended at the other side of the nest.

Image

Tormi was following the whole event.

Tuuli just arrived home after nearly 5 hours; in her absence Remo took care of Tormi for more than 4 hours, with only a very short break. But of course during those 5 hours Tormi was not fed, and this is what Tuuli starts right away, the feeding of Tormi.
It is rather quiet in the woods, not many birds around, but all is well.

There has to be another picture of some of the things that occured this day.
Tuuli was away for 5 hours and when she came back, after feeding, Tormi tried to crawl against Tuuli as usual, but Tuuli rejected her/him.
Tormi did not seemed too distressed about it, and it ended that Tormi slept alone in the nestbowl with Tuuli sleeping standing beside her at the rim of the nest.

This was the day of "being alone". Tormi was almost all day alone in the nest. Tuuli visited once, fed her 2 voles after each other, cleaned the nest, refused to take Tormi close and left again.

Remo also did not take care of Tormi today; he only brought food, several voles.

Image

Tormi trying to get closer to Mom, even to crawl under her, but Tuuli drew back.

Image

This sums it up, the feeling of today. Even when present Tuuli was distant.

Image

Right now Tormi is still alone at the nest, she is cleaning her feathers.

The day ended well! Tuuli came to the nest, letting Tormi be close again and cleaned Tormi's feathers extensivily.

It was a warm day at the LSE nest, in more ways than 1. Not only because of the temperature but also because of the interaction between Tuuli and Tormi.
Remo took for the biggest part care of the food. He brought several voles, a little mouse and a frog. Tuuli also brought prey to the nest.

Tormi is growing and growing. Today she had company for a long time from Tuuli. Together they took care of their feathers

Image

When it became too hot Tuuli shielded Tormi from the sun, for the first time

Image

Image

And in a more subtle way

Image

and Tuuli had time to pick and pull Tormi's feathers

Image

Tormi's feathers are also growing fast. Lots of feathers sticking out all over Tormi

Image

Image

Remo did not look after Tormi today at the nest like on other days, he was doing the hunting. Tuuli is still at the nest, already for 4 and a half hours now. There are not so many birds singing tonight, the weather is still beautiful, and all is well.

A dry and sunny day and not much wind either.
Both Tuuli and Remo watched at times over Tormi. Remo only about half an hour when Tuuli was away from the nest. When she came back with a rather large vole, Remo left.

Image

The rest of the day Remo hunted and brought several large voles and Tuuli watched over Tormi, shielding her against the sun in various ways

Image

Image

Tormi is showing much interest when a prey is brought by Remo

Image

During the day both Tuuli and Tormi clean their feathers, watch each other and eat!

Image

It is still early, so Remo will visit again with prey before dark. The cuckoo was calling just now, but not many birds are singing. The number of birds singing during the sunset is considerably diminished. Maybe all the young are grown and left the nest and the parents left for an other place?
Tuuli sleeps with her head in her backfeathers and Tormi lies behind her, and all is well.

A varied day for our Tormi. For many hours she/he was alone but also for a long time Tuuli stayed with her and when she was alone, Remo visited several times with food.
Even food she could swallow already, like a little vole.

Tormi's wings seem too long and too heavy for her body. They hang down when she relaxes; in her sleep it happens too.

Image

She is developping a pot belly. All that voles and frogs!

Image

When Tuuli is at the nest they often do the same things, like cleaning their feathers

Image

At a certain moment Tuuli was rooting up the bottom of the nest while Tormi pecked her head and throat feathers

Image

Tormi stood for a while straight up, without having to go to the toilet

Image

Remo took care of most of the prey, several large and little voles, and some frogs. Right now Tuuli is at the nest with Tormi who lies in front of her, half under and half not under her and Tuuli is cleaning Tormi's feathers and all is well.

July 5

The day started very, very wet. Even though Remo brought a vole for breakfast.
Tuuli did not stay very long. First in a short time she brought 3 large green twigs to the nest as if to create a dry place for Tormi.
Then she went away at 13.23 hrs and came back at 20.20 hrs. So almost gone for 7 hours.

Remo took care of Tormi during that time. Rain had stopped and he brought a large frog at first. But before he was gone the frog turned to its belly and jumped to freedom

Image

Tormi used the time alone to sleep. She breathed heavily for a while and was very restless. Tormi also had a rasping breath.

Image

After some time she got better. I guess she did become so wet, that she was cold and by moving all the time and breathing so heavy she became warm again.

When she moves through the nest she walks with stretched legs almost all the time

Image

And in the afternoon she even did her first wing flapping

Image

Image

Remo brought one vole after the other in the afternoon, when Tormi wanted to eat something again. The first was rather small and she swallowed at once, second was larger and that one she swallowed after several tries, third and fourth were so big that Tormi had to wait for Tuuli to help her.

After grabbing the prey from Remo, Tormi immediately shields the prey.

Image

And not being able to eat that large vole, Tormi stays on top of it.

At last Tuuli arrived at the nest and fed the 2 remaining voles.

Image

Right now Tormi is sleeping half under Tuuli, purring like a kitten. Remo just brought another vole and all is well.

A beautiful day at Tormi's nest, dry and sunny, with in the morning a strong wind. Remo did most of the hunting and brought many voles to the nest. Most of the morning Tuuli was away and Remo visited the nest regularly with food and stayed for a few minutes with Tormi.

Image

Some of the prey Tormi could handle himself; for the ones that were too large he waited for Tuuli who came to the nest during midday and stayed for hours.

Image

Image

Tormi is experimenting with some kind of new postures

Image

Image

But whenever given the chance, Tormi still likes to crawl under Mom.

Image

Right now Tuuli is still at the nest with Tormi, picking and pulling at Tormi's feathers. Sometimes cleaning the nest and pulling at the twigs, to make things better.
The singing birds are still missed but with our LSE family all is well.

It was a rather dull day, lots of rain during middag and part of the afternoon and Tormi almost all day alone.
Remo visited a few times in the morning, bringing voles.
The food is starting to create a real battle between Mom and Tormi. Mostly Remo gives the food to Mom and then Mom feeds it to Tormi, but Tormi coming to an age that the small and middle sized ones s/he can take care of himself, starts to fight over the deliveries, creating funny situations.

Image

Tuuli has the vole, Tormi grabs it away from her, Tuuli grabs it back, and again Tormi grabs it from Tuuli, gobbling it down in a second.

It was very, very wet in the midday

Image

When becoming dry again in the afternoon, Remo brought several voles and a very large mole.
This also shows a new situation. Tormi grabbing the vole, shielding it with it wings and only when Remo starts to leave, Tormi swallows it as quick as possible.

Image

It is obvious things are changing, when Tormi gets older. Today Tuuli was away from the nest for almost 11 hours and did not even show when it rained. Tormi had to find its way alone.
Right now Tuuli is back, has fed the prey that was in the nest and too big for Tormi to eat by herself, except for the mole. Tuuli took that at first but then choose for the vole instead. Tormi has a large, swollen crop and is purring like a kitten again and all is well.

Part I

The weather was pleasant, not too much sun, dry and windy. Tormi was alone, almost all day. Remo visited many times with prey, and Tormi could almost eat all the brought in voles, except the too large ones.

Remo visited during middag when Tuuli was present also

Image

At one point Tuuli visited also with a prey and she searched the nest for the "leftovers".
At that time Tuuli extensively reorganised the twigs in the nest and also tried to cover Tormi with twigs. Tormi remembered that from earlier and the way to flee that situation is simply to get up.

Image

Image

During that visit, Tuuli seemed restless, left a few times, but came back right away. She did that 3 times, and then left without returning.

During the afternoon Tormi slept, looked over the edge of the nest, stretched her wings and legs

Image

Part II

Tuuli arrived home, fed Tormi the only vole that was still at the nest, and Tormi is purring like a kitten again. It is still the best place to be for Tormi: under Mom and she always try to be there as fast as she can.

Image

Right now Tuuli stands on the rim of the nest and Tormi is trying to crawl under her. Tuuli acts a little bit distant. She did the same last night, but after a while she allowed Tormi to crawl under her, so maybe she will do the same tonight.

Image

The first down feathers lost by Tormi are to be seen in the nest. Every now and then Tormi has one sticking to her beak, which she tries to get rid of by rubbing her beak through het feathers.

There is not that awful lot to tell about today: Remo brought in most of the prey. Several voles of various sizes, of which there was 1 that was too large for Tuuli to eat. Untill a certain moment of the day, after a period of rain, Tormi tried to swallow it and although it took a lot of hard work, the vole disappeared.

Image

After the rain had stopped Tuuli arrived at the nest bringing only a green twig but she stayed rather a long time with Tormi, who made it clear she liked the presence of Tuuli by chirping all the time.

Image

Just to show how fast the feathers are growing right now, a picture of Tormi from the back. It almost seemed to happen overnight. Sitting like this there are almost no white down feathers to be seen anymore.

Image

Tuuli has left a while ago, Tormi is alone, but it won't be for long or Remo or Tuuli will come to the nest with prey. The surrounding of the nest is very quiet tonight, but all is well.

Tuuli nor Remo did come to the nest with food or to bring shelter or company. Tormi is 29 days old today and this night is the first night she sleeps alone.

It was a beautiful day as for the weather, dry, and sunny sometimes.

As a rule now Tormi is alone during the day, while Remo and Tuuli visit now and then. The first mostly bringing the food, the second arriving with a twig, feeding Tormi what is found in the nest, and cleaning the nest and rearranging the twigs.

Remo just brought a vole

Image

Later in the day Tormi is begging for food, by pecking Tuuli's beak and head feathers

Image

And whenever given the slightest opportunity, Tormi crawls under Tuuli's breast. Old habits die hard. It must be the safest place to be

Tormi's back looks like the back of a porcupine: feathers are sticking out everywhere. Some with shiny points

Image

It is a little bit rough sometimes, being "hungry" for several hours already. 2 large voles brought in by Remo and unable to eat them. Tormi just has to wait for Tuuli to appear.

Image

Right now Tormi is lying with his beak towards the voles, obviously smelling them and hoping that Tuuli will show up soon, then all is well.

The nicest proof of today of how much Tormi has grown was given by Tuuli. Although a long period absent today, in the afternoon she came to the nest and stayed for a while. The sun was shining and Tormi was hot and panting.

Tuuli spread her wings to protect her and her left wing tapped a few times on Tormi's head. The last time Tuuli did this, Tormi fitted perfectly under the wings.

Image

Some other proof of Tormi's growth

Image

And the most important proof for Tormi self: she was able "to open" a prey herself and eat it all alone without help

Image

Tuuli is at the nest already a long period. She saw from up high a prey and flew away returning right away with it

Image

Remo has taken care of most of the prey, but today also Tuuli flew in several voles and frogs. The weather was lovely, sunny and no rain nor wind. Right now Tuuli sits next to Tormi who does not stop chattering  and all is well.
