Estonian LSE nest (BS)

July 12

The day started so very, very wet. Tuuli was wet, Tormi was wet

Image

and in spite of that a very brave and also very wet Remo came to the nest with a very heavy large mole. He had to circle the nest first before being able to land properly.

Image

Towards midday the rain stopped and Tuuli started preening and grooming Tormi, who liked that very much and underwent it all

Image

Tormi is trying to do the same to Tuuli, pecking Mom's feathers on the head and throat.

Image

Tuuli brought also a large mole later. Remo delivered the most prey as usual. Not only the mole, but several voles and frogs also. Just when Tormi started to "open" up one of the voles that were in the nest, Tuuli arrived, bringing prey also, and she started to feed Tormi right away. I think all the prey there was, 3 large voles, are fed to Tormi and right now Tormi is chattering, chirping, teedeling to Tuuli, Tormi's head under Tuuli's breast, the way Tormi likes it most and all is well.

P.S.
At this picture it is nice to see how Tormi's feathers are developping

It was a rather lonely day for Tormi, Tuuli was mostly absent, Remo brought in the food.
Severals voles and at least 1 frog.
Tormi is getting fiercer in taking the prey from Remo and defending them, every day

Image

Tormi's featers on her wings and tail were clearly visible now and again

Image

Image

In the afternoon, after many hours alone, Tormi decided to try a vole herself again and it went very well

Image

The sun shone for a little while, Tormi got hot and sat with spreaded wings and that is lovely to see. At a certain point Tormi produced a pellet, a large one

Image

The last few days Tormi practises her wings more often, today she even jumped with spreaded wings. She is growing up fast and I wonder at what time Tuuli will arrive at the nest, maybe at dark? Tuuli did bring a pair of twigs to the nest and even Tormi is effected by this and is pulling at twigs also, mainly when she is alone. Personally I still miss the singing birds in the evening, but at the nest all is well.

It was a day opposite to yesterday; today Tuuli is at the nest since midday and only went away to collect a twig and later a fieldmouse or some sort of small mammal. Yesterday Tuuli was hardly present at the nest, only at sunset she came home. Not 1 day at the nest is the same as another day. That makes watching it so exciting!!

Remo did again very good by bringing in several voles, frogs, a mole and something that looked like a fish. But nobody knows for sure. Tormi became wild about it. Could not eat it herself but would not let Tuuli help her. Tormi almost became aggressive and did not stop chattering while trying to eat that animal. And Tuuli was watching it from a distance, did not like to come too close to that fierce Tormi.

Image

Image

Image

After getting a few bites from it, Tormi tried to swallow the rest in whole, but it was much too broad and did not go down.

Image

Because Tuuli was there since midday, the family several times was together when Remo brought a prey. It all went smooth and nice.

Image

Enough time to relax and "talk" to each other

Image

A few minutes ago Remo delivered a mole, rather large. Tormi took it from Remo, but went along when Tuuli took it to feed Tormi. The mole is gone, Tuuli still standing at the nest near Tormi and all is well.

Today Tormi is 35 days old and a juvenile, not a chick anymore.

The day started very wet:

Tormi half protected by Tuuli

Image

Tormi wakes up

Image

First does her "business"

Image

Then Tuuli makes loose the place where they slept the whole night

Image

Tuuli flies away after a while and her main task is to collect dry twigs, to create a dry place for Tormi to lie down.

Tormi stretches several times a day, but not very often a complete stretch of the wing.
After every toilet visit she flaps and stretches her wings also.

Image

Remo brought several prey: voles, frogs and a large mole. Tuuli also brought in a frog and a small, little mammal.

In the afternoon it was still early but because of the weather already so dark that it looked like sunset for Tuuli and she stayed in the nest while Tormi took his place under Tuuli's breast.
Tuuli had to scratch first, but then allowed Tormi putting her head at the safest place still:

Image

Right now both Tuuli and Tormi are at the nest. Tormi is sleeping but Tuuli is looking around. Maybe Remo will come to the nest with another prey again, then all is well.

It was a rather grey day at the nest, only in the afternoon a few rays of sun were seen; not enough warmth to spread your wings for!

Tormi is growing almost visable. Especially the last few days it is going fast. One of the things that is part of her growing up is the fiercenes with which she protects her food
This morning it was a true battle between Tormi and Tuuli over a large frog, which Tormi is not yet capable of eating herself. So Tuuli tries to grab it and feed it to her

Image

The same thing happened in the afternoon concerning a too large vole for Tormi to eat by herself

Image

Image

Remo, who brought these big prey is standing from a safe distance and watching what is happening in his first so peaceful home.

After feeding it sometimes is scary to see how much Tormi's crop is swollen

Image

But then again, how else could she grow so fast without all these voles, moles and frogs, with today where mainly brought in by Remo. Tuuli has been busy with the nest. Bringing in coniferous twigs and rearranging the twigs that are already in the nest.

Tormi grooming herself and at the same time pushing her tail in the air

Image

Lazy lying in the nest: Dad is bringing the food, Mom is offering shelter when needed and all is well.

It was a rather dull day at the LSE nest today. Tuuli was away the largest part of the day and then not much is happening. Remo brought several voles in the morning, than left Tormi to herself and came in the afternoon with a vole and 2 large moles. The last one the biggest I have ever seen at the LSE nest.

A vole in the morning: Tormi protecting it with her wings stretched completely

Image

The mole that was first brought in, in the afternoon was already very big compared to the vole that was already there

Image

A few minutes later Remo brought a second mole and left it at the rim of the nest. The biggest ever, so far.

Image

A view at Tormi's developping tail and back feathers

Image

Tuuli still is not been back at the nest since morning. Hopefully she will arrive soon to feed Tormi those large moles, then all will be well.

Early in the morning, very soon after being awake, Tormi begged for food

Image

It was nice weather, dry and sunny, but a little too strong wind, the nest moved. During the morning hours Remo brought several voles, moles and a frog. Tuuli also brought a small vole and a small frog.

Two times Remo at the nest

Image

Image

During midday Tormi was alone for a few hours,

Image

but Remo and Tuuli made up for it by bringing much food again and Tuuli with her staying at the nest with Tormi.

Tormi is looking very funny: lots of sticking out down feathers on both sides and the back of her head

Image

It is still early and Remo will probably deliver some more voles before the night. Tuuli is standing next to a sleeping Tormi, who has a completely filled crop and must have the feeling that all is well.

Today Tormi is 38 days old and this will be the first night she is going to sleep without Tuuli so close she can put her head under Tuuli's breast. Tuuli is at the nest but stays at the rim, the moving around the nest and the chirping of Tormi ignoring.

Dry weather, no sun, so not too warm for our Tormi, who, by the way, is becoming a terribly beautiful bird

Image

Image

Remo brought enough food, several large moles and voles. I did not watch much today so I do not exactly know how much prey were brought in by Remo, or by Tuuli, but watching this beautiful filled crop of Tormi, we can be sure she is never hungry for long...

Image

This picture of Tormi lying down, almost fully grown now, show the top layer of her wing feathers and I must be very much mistaken if I do not see the same colouring Tuuli has

Image

Right now Tormi is lying in front of the camera, not asleep but looking around her; there is a mole at the right side of the nest and I assume Remo will bring some more food because it is still early and all is well.

July 20

It was about the same day as yesterday, as far as the weather was concerned. Mainly a grey day, no rain, and in the afternoon a few moments with sunshine. Our LSE are rather sensitive to sun and warmth so Tormi found a reason to sit with wide spread wings, tail pushed in the air.

Image

Tuuli visited and tried to feed Tormi the large vole Remo brought earlier. She grabbed the vole from under Tormi, who grabbed it back. This happened 2 times and then Tormi swallowed that vole as quick as she could. Few moments later the sun broke through the clouds and both were looking so beautiful. Especially Tormi with those shiny feathers!

Image

There was hardly any wind today and that is nicer to watch, when the nest is not moving all the time.
Remo brought several voles and also moles. Tuuli also brought something, small enough to be eaten by Tormi in 1 swallow.

Image

Tormi is flapping her wings many times a day. Now and again making little jumps with it and also she is acting as if she is hunting, grabbing a prey, while jumping and flapping, which is not yet eaten.
When a prey is brought she is immediately protecting it by spreading her wings around it and bending over.

Image

Remo just now brougt an other small mammal, mouse or vole. He is doing great! Tormi gobbled it down and all is well.

A dry and sunny day at our LSE nest. Tormi is practising her wings many times a day

Image

One can say she is alone during the whole day and the parents bring food. Tuuli gives a little more attention to Tormi and the nest, but the visits are short.

Image

Remo brought about 6 voles, and Tuuli 2 or 3. It is very difficult to see because the prey disappears into Tormi almost before one is able to see what kind it is.

Image

During the absence of the parents Tormi is passing the time by grooming, wing flapping, visits to the "toilet" and looking about her.

Image

And when eaten, this balloon of a crop is the result.

Image

Right now Tuuli came to the nest; it still makes Tormi "happy" and she is making a lot of "chirping" sounds, and all is well.

In the evening something very strange happened which is worth posting about. Tuuli went to sleep in the nestbowl, even lying flat, while Tormi stood sleeping on the rim of the nest. Later Tormi lied down also. It was the LSE world upside down

A hot day in Estonia and therefore in the nest. Tormi is not very hungry and likes lazy lying during the day.
She was alone during the morning.

Tormi tries to make contact with father Remo

Image

The food was brought early in the morning and both parents did not come to the nest anymore, untill 5.15 pm. Then Tuuli came and is there untill now.

Tormi almost fully grown and amazingly beautiful!

Image

Image

Tuuli pecked insects presumably, from Tormi's back

Image

Remo just brought a vole, which Tuuli took over from him and fed to Tormi. After that one was finished Tuuli took the last vole that was there since this morning and fed it also. Because I'm writing here I did not see it, but I think Tuuli just jumped on the branch of the tree. And she or Remo undoubtedly will bring more food before dark. Tormi is "chirping", because Tuuli is at the branch still and all is well.

A day with some contradictions. At first it was dry, later in the day it started to rain and thunder and Tormi became very wet

Image

Image

Tormi was alone the whole day, after the morning feed. She did exercise many times

Image

Image

and her wings are making sounds already when flapping. That must mean more power is in them.

Just a few minutes ago was the first time since early morning Remo, who brought a nice large vole and Tuuli, who brought a large frog, visited the nest and Tormi again. Both prey Tormi ate independently. Even the frog which did not went down in bites but in one piece.
The rain has nearly stopped and although Tormi is very wet, all is well.

SPECIAL edition of the daily summary because of the ringing of Tormi

Tormi heard something and took a attacking posture and even kind of hissed

Image

She was grabbed by two big gloved hands

Image

She was ringed with on the left leg a ring with the letters KK and on the right leg R27542:

Image

A feather was taken out of the neck, which gave her the opportunity to try to peck this person

Image

Her wings were measured

Image

And the person collected several feathers and prey rests out of the nest.
Tormi was covered with a cloth while the used materials were all put in the bag again

Image

Tormi was released again and is somewhat confused and for a long time stands very still in the same posture.

Image

Image

And now we have to wait untill we know if Tormi is indeed a "she" or a "he" but she is registrated so at least we can "follow" her in her future.

It was a rather clouded day, no sun was seen. The most important event of the day was the ringing of Tormi of course, but also there was a very nice, sweet feeding of Tormi by Tuuli, with very little bites which Tormi dropped many times and Tuuli searched them again on the floor of the nest and then ate it herself.

Image

Remo brought prey many times

Image

And the development of Tormi must be almost finished

her tail has become beautiful

Image

and at this picture the different colours of the different layers of the wing are clearly seen

Image

Remo has just brought an other vole, which Tormi swallowed in whole. Tuuli did not come back since the ringing but that is not special for her. She will be here before it is completely dark, I'm sure and despite the stress of the ringing all will be well.

First my apologies because there are many pictures today, but there were many beautiful moments.
Tuuli did come to the nest for the night after all, but very late.

After waking and making toilet together (feather grooming etc) Tuuli disappeared and Remo brought a vole.
At the end of the morning Tuuli came to the nest with a vole, which Tormi swallowed in whole and started to feed Tormi the vole Remo brought earlier.

After that there was a lot of grooming, "cuddling" and attention for Tormi.

Image

Tormi begging for food on this picture; Tuuli started to feed the vole which is in front of Tormi.

Image

Beautiful, together in the sunlight

Image

Tuuli pecking stuff off Tormi's feathers

Image

They both watch at something they hear

Image

After a long time Tuuli flew away and Tormi looked in the direction in which she went

Image

Later in the day Tormi, who was lazy the whole day, started doing wing exercises and jumping while flapping. She even came loose from the ground for a few seconds

Image

During the morning there were many sunny spells but in the midday it started to rain and that went on for a time. Sometimes less and other times more rain, and thunder in the afternoon.
During a dry spell Remo brought a very large mole. Tormi did his utmost, but could not "open" it. That is a kind of prey that still has to wait untill Tuuli is home.

Image

It is still early, Tuuli lies flat in the nest, not asleep but looking around her. Shoved the mole a little and is hoping for Tuuli to come to the nest and feed it to her. Then all is well again.

During the morning hours untill about 2.30 p.m. about 5, 6 voles were brought in by Remo and a large frog.
Tuuli brought a vole also.

Image

After one of the departures of Remo, Tormi is surprised at the way Remo leaves, with a lot of noice over the edge of the nest in front of the camera.

Image

Tormi is alone since the last delivery. Practicing her wings and jumps.

Image

Image

The development of the feathers goes on. The white spots seemed to have grown larger and her "pants" also has white feathers now, especially on the upper legs

Image

In midday the sun starts shining and we all know LSE do not like it too hot.

Image

Time for 1 of the parents to come to the nest again. Tormi can not do anything with the large mole which is there since yesterday, and the last time she ate was at 2.30 pm. And the company would be welcomed by Tormi and then all will be well.

It is easy to repeat oneself by posting pictures, but some pictures are so great, that it is not bad if there is already been one similar like this.

Tormi stretching wings

Image

Image

During the morning, which was dry but not sunny, Remo brought several voles and Tuuli came later in the day with a vole also and fed Tormi an other vole.

Image

Tormi is getting "bored" slightly and "mature enough" to go and jump some branches, but passes the time in the meantime with a pine cone for a toy.

Image

The most beautiful picture of Tormi while watching Tuuli leave:

Image

Right now Tormi is standing in the nestbowl; a few minutes earlier Remo brought a vole, which was gone in a second, as most of the times, and the waiting is for Tuuli: will she come to the nest tonight again? Then all will be well.

The most remarkable event of the day took place in the afternoon when Tuuli spent over 2 hours in the nest caring for Tormi. She groomed and groomed and gave so much attention:

Image

Tormi was reacting by making the sweetest sounds ever and once in a while trying to do the same to Tuuli, who was not going to allow her:

Image

Removing down feathers and later at the other side of the nest the same thing happened:

Image

Even covering Tormi with a twig as she did a long time ago now:

Image

Remo brought several prey, all voles. And after Tuuli flew away she came to the nest a few minutes later and brougt Tormi a frog. For our Tormi as big a delicatessen as for the adult LSE's.

There were a few raindrops late afternoon but the rest of the day it was dry without sun.
It was a moving afternoon and a beautiful day with our LSE family. Right now Tormi is sleeping with a full stomach/crop and all is well.

Not completely dark yet, but Tuuli arrives at the nest, with very wet breast and head feathers.
Happy chirping by Tormi.

A day with very much food for Tormi. Remo brought all kinds of vole, frogs, probably a mole, and in abundance.

Tuuli arrived now and then, sometimes with a twig, also a few times with prey.

Tormi was alone most part of the day, staring many times and long times at the branches of the tree but did not make "the jump" yet.

Image

Tormi really is begging for attention in some way or another. But when Tuuli bends over to groom her feathers she starts pecking at Tuuli, who then stops the motion.

Image

Tormi is teasing Mom by pulling her wing and/or tail feathers every time she tries to groom them.

Image

Image

Only a few drops of rain were heard in the morning, the rest of the day it was dry, without sun. Tuuli is at the nest right now, which one can tell, without even watching, by the sounds Tormi makes, finally giving Tuuli the chance to groom Tormi.

Image

The evening sun is shining very "thin" , no other birds can be heard and all is well.

Today Tormi is 51 days old! Quite a bird already.
The day went smooth, many prey in the morning hours, most of which were brought by Remo, some by Tuuli.

During the day Tormi flaps her wings regularly, with high jumps to make it even nicer to do. At other times she just stands near the stem of the tree and stares at the branches.

Image

Tuuli came early in the afternoon to the nest and took place at the branch on the left side of the nest. Tormi did not stop "talking' to her and looked up at her all the time.

Image

Tuuli went away a few times, one time she brought back a vole, an other time just a twig and it seems to be an early night for both of them.
Tuuli did not leave the nest anymore.

Image

Both woke up at the same time a few minutes ago. Tormi felt again the need to flap her wings and jump at the same time. Tuuli watched this exercises and all is well.
