Ame I think what the wikipedia article is trying to say is despite differences in types of food sources there seem to be these same cycles. I suppose many food sources could be over eaten to the point of crashing a population so the cycle does not vary according to the food sources of local regions, although I would think if there was a terrible blight in a food source that could cause a crash. But probably in nature, unlike in a farm field, there is always a variety of plants growing.

yes. and also the variation of numbers of predators (wolves in the case of snowshoe hare i think) did not explain the variation of hare population in a straightforward way. i suppose these are difficult questions because nature is not simple. there are so many things that can affect other things so it is "web" where everything is linked to every other thing.

i guess these interconnections in animal world are like weather which has turned out to be a chaotic system in the long perpective. in the '70ies it was still believed that there were 7 or so variables which determined the weather and that it would only require enough computing power to solve the equations which link these variables. in the '80ies it was discovered that this is not the case: it's a law of nature that it is actually impossible to predict weather precisely in the long run. the butterfly-effect was used to depict this chaotic feature in the weather: a butterfly hovering its wings in the rainforest in Brazil can cause a hurricane on the other side of the world.

when meteorologists make their calculations more than once with their best models and fastest computers they get different answers every time. --i think that this is what they actually do: they make calculations with different models, compare the results and then decide what kind of weather they predict. the predictions nowadays are actually very good in short perspective, but a week ahead or more it gets more and more uncertain.

i opened the tooni-camera from the front page of EENET.EE, just for fun and to my surprise it said on white screen "too many retries etc.". so i was wondering could the camera still be in the forest and would it transmit if it had enough power. maybe..? or did someone at EENET forget to pull the plug out from the tooni-camera on their end?

so i left the camera open with the white picture in the background of my screen and what do you know: at 10.17 i heard a click and then i saw that it had tried to connect! i think i'll leave the VLC-player on for today just to see whether it'll show something.
(probably there will be nothing but wouldn't it be funny to see a glimpse from the forest one more time...)

at 11.17 the camera clicked again but no luck.

I don't think that the camera is still out there. They have posted a picture of the nest when they fetched the camera

oh yes, that's true: i saw the picture then, too, but i've forgotten. the 'camera' still clicks so it must be 'on' at the EENET. wishful thinking: just hoping to still see a glimpse from there. :peek:

You have done a lot of work, Felis, thank you for saving this unique documentation! Thanks again also to ame, who saved the WTE breeding season 2009 this way, and to Ohansen, who came up with the idea. He stored the WTE pictures from 2010 at mejuba.

I have heard from Urmas - Koit and Eha had a successful breeding season as well. He'll enquire about the gender test of Tormi (and the storklets).
