18:29 - Remo was in the nest when I opened the cam, by Phi's attitude I assume he delivered something eatable:

Edit: It was a frog, Phi swallowed it whole..

Little Phi is having dinner. Remo brought it around 19:23, but since Phi covered it immediately, I could not see what it is. Still can only guess, a frog?

Talking about the difference - continued from the other nest - here. It's Tuuli who feeds the little one, male generally don't do, the only instance I have witnessed was last year at the Latvian nest, when Metra left after a chick did not hatch but Dr. Bergmanis exchanged the damaged egg, Macho, the male brooded the egg until it hatched. We all hoped for Metra to come back, but she did not, and when the chick was there, Macho brought a mole and tried to feed the little one, but did not know how to rip it into small parts. It was heartbreaking to see how he tried to put the whole mole into the little thing. Thankfully Dr. Bergmanis immediately went and took the chick out!

Remo is the father who comes with prey to this nest, and he is a super father, I think all here are really gone for him. He is a bit smaller than Tuuli and also darker in colour.
In Metra and Macho's nest it is easier as Macho is much lighter than Metra, the mother.

Right, it's Tuuli. Yes, this year we have many nests! Confusing in the beginning. But so exciting too!

Mostly the males bring the food -- I guess Tuuli brought food today. The males do not seem to have the instinct to rip up the food for a chick, but they do deliver food and "hand" it over generously -- still the chicks seem to then protect the food from their fathers (practice for later I guess). If the chick has its wings open and is hiding prey you can bet the adult eagle is the male. (I don't think they protect their meal from mum.)

Because males are slimmer, their legs seem longer.
Remo I recognize because he is so dark and his beak just seems to glow in his dark face. (Sometimes in the dark Tuuli looks a bit like that) And as Felis said the males often stand there looking confused and a bit proud.

This year I have seen already a couple of times that Tuuli brought something to eat from her trips. I don't remember this from last year.
Phi has grown so much and already has so many dark feathers! Time is flying!

I know, Phi is a bit older than Tormi on the same day, but just like that, this is Tormi with parents last year on July 8

Some material to find answers are in the database Aquila Pomarina Collection. It was so fascinating last year to watch them, I started collecting all those bits and pieces and finally decided that if LK-Forum wants, I'll put all the stuff into a second database. Maybe you find some more answers (or more questions?) there, and if I can help, I am no specialist though, feel free to ask! What I don't know I'll try to find out if necessary!

She can eat a frog but a mole is yet too hard for her.

Somehow the cam was freezing up on me -- when it came back to life Tuuli had arrived back and was ripping up the mole.

Yes moles are big, and apparently their skin is rather tough. So they seem to be the hardest things for the LSE babies to eat on their own.

I have seen Eha, Metra and Tuuli struggle to get hole in the skin of the mole, so it is almost impossible for a little chick...
