Fascinating news: Scottish Wildlife Trust
Osprey tracking update – FR3 joins sibling in the Gambia!

Posted on October 12, 2015 by jonathan

FR3 has wasted no time since last week and I’m delighted to report has arrived safely in the Gambia.

In the space of five days our young osprey has crossed three deserts: the Western Sahara, Akchar and Trarza; passed through the whole of Mauritania and most of Senegal, to arrive on the northern bank of the Gambia river, close to the village of Jumansan Koto. As the osprey flies FR3 is now only a short distance of some 30km (20 miles) from sibling FR4!

Very Sad News: Loch Garten's 2013 offspring BREAGHA’S TRACKER FOUND

by Jeremy Roberts - Jayne Stevenson 19 Oct 2015 11:24 AM
On Friday, Noisette and her search team were successful in finding a satellite tracking device in their extended search of the woods where Breagha was last located and where feathers were found previously. We can confirm that this is Breagha’s tracker from the id number, 128061.

The tracker has sustained some damage (on the other side) which may be the result of animal activity. More feathers were also found and, from the GPS co-ordinates provided, these were around 20 m away from the tracker. The other remains are yet to be found. All this would indicate that some animal, possibly a fox, has scavenged the body and the chances of finding further large intact remains must be limited.

This brings to one end point the sad conclusion to the adventures of a beautiful 28 month old osprey which we hoped would be the first to return to Scotland. The final stage of the search will perhaps define more clearly why Breagha died. There has been speculation based on feather damage that he may have been shot and that could certainly be the case looking at one of Noisette’s photos which shows a small amount of primary feather barb damage and the fact that the fish farm area is a popular hunting area. Hopefully if the body is found it may throw more light on this likelihood. Noisette and her team are continuing to search the area. We are sure that she will post to the forum giving you all a much more detailed account of what she has done and discovered.

Noisette has done a fantastic job in her efforts to search the fish farm area to find evidence of Breagha’s demise. She has clearly shown the great value of her local knowledge and love of wildlife. RSPB would like to express their sincere thanks and look forward to hearing what she finds in her further visits to the area. If there is evidence that Breagha was indeed shot then that is a local French matter to pursue; it is also a matter in which RSPB would take great interest.

I’d also like to thank Mike for his work on Breagha’s tracker, and for liaising with Noisette.

LM12 returns!!!

Posted on March 25, 2016 by charlotteranger

Fantastic news!!! After waiting patiently for a week for her partner to return, we are extremely excited to announce that LM12 has arrived back at the nest. He touched down at 11:20 this morning and despite not receiving the warmest of welcomes, we have already witnessed an attempted mating.

Uta, we are not alone with that problem for german users: I can't open the cam stream either and in rspb-forum there is a query from Holger H & Alex from Germany >> https://www.rspb.org.uk/community/place ... 32219858=9

And I wrote a query too > https://www.rspb.org.uk/community/place ... 35#1010622

LOTL web cam is the only one from all other cams with JW Player that doesn't work in Germany. I didn't found any solution so far...

It's a real mess.

Uta its only a guess of mine that the LOTL stream problem might be on the providers side not on our german computers and browser like opera, firefox, IE 11 etc. but I am no expert.

I had no stream problems last years.

18 days after reuniting with her partner LM12 at Loch of the Lowes, LF15 finally put an end to our anxious wait and laid her first egg of the season in the early hours of this morning!

Over the last few days she has kept us guessing, however definite behavioural changes during the night led us to believe that she was close to laying and thankfully she didn’t disappoint! It started off a quiet evening with the female perched on the nest, trying to get some sleep whilst being rocked by the blustery breezes. But at 12.25am this all changed as she moved to the centre of the nest appearing very alert and for the next 10 minutes she proceeded to fidget constantly in the middle of the nest cup, seemingly unable to settle...

Ospreys usually lay eggs 2 to 3 days apart so we started the nightshift yesterday hoping that tonight would be the night that egg number 2 would arrive. The next few hours were spent in anticipation as she grew increasingly restless, shifting position ever more frequently. At 00:53 she stood up, raised her tail and began a high pitched calling, telling us that an egg would soon be on its way. Her tail began to pulse and in time her whole body was pulsing with contractions. At 01:03 she went still and stood up to reveal 2 eggs in the nest cup! After manoeuvring herself and her clutch into a suitable position she gently lay down to incubate them and had soon nodded off for a more peaceful rest of the night. Fingers crossed we will have a third egg in the nest shortly!

Loch of the Lowes - A Complete Clutch
Posted on April 18, 2016 by charlotteranger

In an almost exact re-run of the laying of the first two eggs, in little over 10 minutes with only a few obvious contractions our female stood up at 4.18am this morning to show off the latest addition – a third egg to complete her clutch.

Loch of the Lowes > Let the hatching begin!

Posted on May 18, 2016 by charlotteranger - At 05:22 this morning we managed to get our first glimpse of our suspected cracked egg in daylight, and were delighted to see a very small hole in the egg shell!
