I watched the female on the nest this morning and early afternoon. She was there a long time and had a full crop. She just flew off. Lovely to have gotten my first osprey-fix of the season. Can't wait for Piret & Madis and Ilmar & Irma to return.

Excitement at the Manton Bay Nest!

By Kayleigh Brookes on March 19, 2014

We have had some excitement at the Manton Bay nest this morning! The Manton Bay female flew off the nest with half a fish at about 09:30. Roughly 15 minutes later, staff in the centre spotted an Osprey landing on the nest, sporting a ring! Could it be 5R?

On closer inspection we saw that the ring was number 25. From this we know that this bird is a female who fledged from Rutland in 2010, and she bred in the area last year, raising three chicks.

She seems to be settling in on the nest, scraping it out and moving some sticks. What will happen when the Manton Bay female returns to find an intruder on her nest?!

More Action from Manton Bay!

By Kayleigh Brookes on March 19, 2014

Following on from the arrival of 25(10) at the Manton Bay nest…

25 seemed to be settling down on the nest, moving some sticks about and scraping out the centre. We were wondering where the Manton Bay female was, and then she suddenly appeared on the nest with her fish. She was showing defensive behaviour towards 25, who didn’t take the hint and tried to steal her fish! What a cheeky young Osprey!

The Manton Bay female was having none of it, and tried to fly away to protect the fish. However, 25 wasn’t going to let her get away that easily, and she grabbed hold of it! A brief tug-of-war was initiated, which ended with the Manton Bay female pushing 25 away with her foot and high-tailing it to safety.

It appears that 25 has now finally accepted that she’s not getting this nest or this fish. She was seen flying away from the area, towards the nest where she bred last year. Her arrival caused a great deal of excitement here at Rutland Water! We look forward to seeing more Ospreys returning to the area in the coming days! Keep an eye on here for updates.

I believe that both male and female have arrived back at the Site B nest.

Hopefully 5R will not be far behind.

One more home at Rutland Ospreys;

Browse: Home / That’s five!
That’s five!

By Lucy McRobert on March 21, 2014

“There’s another one back!” Came the elated voice down the phone! “00(09) – John’s just seen her at Shallow Water Hide.”

Quickly diving to the webcam, finger poised at the record button, we waited with baited breath. She must have been close.

“She’s on top of the perch!” – thus just out of reach of the camera. Sitting on top of it, in fact. The image was bouncing slightly under the weight of this familiar female, tantalizingly close yet just out of view. We’d been watching our Manton Bay female soaring over Lax Hill only minutes before, the occasional Black-headed Gull swooping in to mob her, when suddenly she seemed to make a beeline back towards the Bay. That was when the phone rang.

Staring avidly at the webcam we waited, when there she was: the Manton Bay female back to defend her nest, gliding elegantly into the shot and spreading herself wide.

Annoyingly, from the Visitor Centre we couldn’t spy 00(09), but a quick glance back at the board showed that she was bonding with another male in the area last year, but unfortunately it came to nothing – fingers crossed for this year! She’s three days later, too, having arrived back on the 18th March last year, but we’ll forgive her for that. This gives us potential for four nests so far – and it’s only the 21st March! Interestingly, several birds that have returned so far have stopped in at Manton as a first port of call (which is handy for us!). This really is shaping up to be a phenomenal start to the season, and to top it all off, our pair of Kestrels are looking rather cosy out the front of the Centre, too!

We’ve all got our fingers crossed for the return of 5R in the next few days (if not hours!), so keep your eyes on that camera!
Way to go folks..er birds :headroll:

New Arrivals in Manton Bay
By Kayleigh Brookes on March 22, 2014

We have had lots more excitement happening at the Manton Bay nest these past few days! Firstly, as we reported on the blog, another Osprey returned to the area on 21 March – 00(09), a female who fledged from Rutland in 2009 and has returned in the past but not yet bred. She turned up at the Manton Bay nest at about 09:20 and hung around for a while, until the resident female saw her off. Here are a selection of photographs taken by John Wright of 00(09) and the Manton Bay female.

Secondly, we have had a visit from another Rutland Osprey today! 5N(04) landed on the Manton Bay nest at about 11:30, and was seen off by the Manton Bay female. 5N(04) has been breeding at Rutland for the past seven years. This was actually her nest in 2007! She is the sister of 5R(04), the Manton Bay male. Here is a screen shot we managed to take from the nest camera.

30(05 Has arrived at the nesting site.

She sure was in a hurry.
Female Osprey 30 fledged from the Site B nest in 2005. She returned to Rutland in 2007 and bred for the first time in 2009, raising two chicks with translocated male 08(01), at a nest on private land known as Site K. 30 and 08 raised a further six chicks from 2010 to 2012. Sadly 08 did not return in 2013 and 30 spent the summer alone. We hope she’ll return to breed with a new male in 2014.
So she has. :D She did not dilly-dally on the way.
