I'm watching the camera at the moment. Poor Iris is sitting there covered in snow and trying to keep her egg warm.
I still hope Stan will come back and everything will turn out ok!

Hellgate Nest in Montana

Update on Hellgate Nest in Montana.

Iris arrived back at last year's Hellgate nest on April 3rd, and waited, and waited for Stan, her mate from last year. While waiting, an apparently no-good "Romeo" would occasionally show up and mate with her, and then leave for long periods of time. He never brought her any fish or contributed to the nest, but would STEAL her fish, including ones she had buried in the nest. There was suspicion that he had another mate and was bringing her the "goodies". Iris seemed to tolerate him, but there appeared to be no real bond, but just tolerance on her part (while still waiting for Stan).

Most commenters (on Facebook, not a really scientific venue) thought he was just an opportunist and there were a lot of derogatory comments posted about him throughout the period between his arrival and the first egg laid. I admit, I was one of them.

Early this morning Iris laid her first egg, and the "fish-stealer" showed up almost immediately, and requested his first turn at brooding the egg, and Iris let him have it. But he still had never brought her a fish, so everyone wondered if this Gigolo would or could ever prove himself as a real mate.

To the astonishment of nearly everyone, he brought Iris a really good sized fish this afternoon (USA time). After she first wrestled it from his reluctant talons, and flew off with it, he eagerly began brooding "his" egg again. He spent most of the day in or around the nest, and chased off potential intruders (while also taking turns with her brooding the egg).

It just shows that we humans, impatient as we are, still do not trust nature and her ways. We need instant results to our questions. Now it looks like he may actually make a fine mate (...unless, of course, Stan returns on May 6, which was Stanley's arrival date last year :)

Surely I must know you from the Hellgate forum. 8-) There were at least 3 or possibly 4 different males with Iris as far as I remember. This last one, Midas (named for his golden feathers on the back of his head) is the one that brought the fish and in the middle of the night, I saw him brooding the egg which is a good sign he will stay. And I do miss Stan, very much, but he never arrived back home...

Chimega, yes, we probably "see" each other there. But for at least the last 10 days it's been only one male visiting Iris. He has not been named yet by the site administrators, but individual Facebook users have assigned several names to him: Romeo, Midas, Tanley, plus several others. They are all the same bird (at least for the past 10 days). He is as large (or larger) than Iris, which is quite unusual. I saw him deliver the first fish to Iris when I checked in today. What a surprise.

Stanley returned, and brought Iris a huge fish! Fantastic story. Nearly everyone had given up on his return.

It's great that Stanley returned! I couldn't believe how he got rid of the eggs almost immediately and brought a fish for Iris. Now they can start their own family.

It will be interesting to see if the new male keeps coming back, or if Stanley and Iris will have peace to begin nesting.

I sure hope that there's peace, especially after watching Madis' and Piret's nest, so sad. I feel sorry for all three, but especially for little Piret. I read on the Facebook page for the ospreys that Stan and the other osprey already had a little fight and that Stanley won.

I'm really glad that Stan arrived and is providing fish and fixing up the nest.

It's so great that Stan is back now and it was wonderful when he arrived with a big fish for Iris!

I just read on the Facebook page that it's not quite sure if the eggs are really out of the nest. Someone will go and take a look because it could be that Stan only kicked them to the rim of the nest and Iris put them back.

But with or without eggs, I hope that Stan and Iris now will have peace in their nest and that they will not be disturbed.

Stan got rid of all 3 of Midas' eggs. He kicked the two that were already there, out of the nest, shortly after he arrived home. She laid another one 3 days later and as soon as she was off the nest. Stan destroyed that egg, too.

However, a lot of mating went on between Stan and Iris and Iris laid 2 more eggs which Stan obviously knows are his. He broods them, brings food for Iris on a regular basis and even feeds her on occasion. He is the excellent father he always was. I am so very happy to see him back home. :loveshower:
