Re: Autumn in Finland

Post by Olga »

25th September at 17:00. Autumn is late here in Finland. In this picture there are lilacs, an apple tree and some hortensia bushes (hydrangea arb. annabelle), ( two different junipers). One little birtch is yellow and it has only some leaves left. It was dried be because there is not very much soil. But the weather has been exeptionally warm. Only here and there some birtches are yellow - partly. Some have turned gray brownish. Maples are turning orange and red.

In the picture the blue lilac leaves are dark green but the white lilac leaves are turning light, maybe citron yellow - interesting to see. My big aspen is all green!

My other dog was there. He didn't want to move be cause he has a bone!

It has been an exeptionally warm September. Many trees are still green but of course, all is changing each day and night.

Wow, this year the fall colours are much later -- although I guess there could be a big change any day now.

Olga, how fortunate that you have last year's photos!
It is a good comparison.

It's a stormy day.

A fallen old birtch in the garden of our neighbour, actually a half of the birtch fell, it was broken from the midst. Neightbour is happy it did not fall towards his house.

The house of th neighbour is about 20 meters from the birtch, to the left behind the hazels. There is now two men at work. They are on the little road down the hill and they are sawing the top branches of the birtch There are other trees too, one spruse top and and old tuomi? on the same heep.

At last our old birtch has got the right colour for the season :D

Hm.. :puzzled: The picture should be bigger. The photo is not the sharpest, but it looks better as bigger.

Even more big picture is here  :

A view from my window this morning. The young birch is yellow, at last. Weater proadcast warns for snow fall tomorrow. Leaves are still on the trees, and the snow is coming.. :slap: I can't believe it.

Olga, I don't know what is normal for your first snow, but you seem suroprised to say that snow will fall while leaves are still on trees.
Does this mean that snow is earlier than usual, or leaf fall is later, or ???

It would be one month too early here in Southern Finland, it should come in the midst of November earliest. Normally we have here a very dark season when leaves have fallen down, the soil is dark grayish brown, days are at shortest, and the sun shines low and seldom, if there is rain, it is water or icy water. 'Marraskuu - November': The word marras originates from Latin mors and it means 'death', the Nature is like 'dead', in deep asleep in darknes, birds are silent, animals are quiet, no-one has pups, chicks ...The first snow is like a mark or sign of something new to come, a promise of a new sycle in the circle of life, but not until December-January. In former times this season was the time when people believed that 'people of Toonela' (the third world under the soil, land of the shadow, land of the dead people) were moving in shadows.

Now many trees are still green.. I am surprised if the snow will cover green leaves tomorrow - it was repeated on the radio thewarning for snow fall here tomorrow. I still do not believe before I see it in tomorrow morning! 8-)

it's +2 C now at 23:10

Sounds a bit warm for snow, but there could be an icy blast move in.

Your description of this time of year -- normally -- is very interesting.

No snow today. Well, perhaps I saw somw few grayis white wet snow flakes falling in the afternoon, but it was not a real snow fall. Two pictures taken from the kitchen window today. Hazels are still green! Crested tits have began to visit the temporary feeder :D Not very good picture.. I never see them in summer.

The remaining trunk of the old birch that fell two days ago is seen behind further.

Such a foresty scene. I tried to take a picture of one our Bush Tits (the only tit we have). I cannot see any birds in the photo. I have no idea if it is even there or if all of them simply hid behind leaves -- they are tiny and move in large family flocks this time of year -- actually all the time except when nesting.
