Yes, it was. This is a very special fall be cause there are still green leaves on the trees. But the squirrel behind my window eating nuts is changing his fur from reddish brown to gray

your squirrel is just lovely and you can really see the fur is gray on the back...so the winter is still coming :puzzled:

One of our neighbours tells us we have a squirrel in our garden. :puzzled: That was end of Sept. but we have never seen it ?
About the same time but 4am we heard a great 'screaming' from a bird or animal, several times  As we were at the open window upstairs we saw a creature.......coming from one garden, along the pavement and into another garden.
We are intruiged.!! It was slightly smaller than a cat, long body, dark coloured with a long bushy tail. ?? A ferret, squirell or marten, maybe ? Maybe its our "OLD" friend the Pine Marten? but we haven't seen him for about 18 yrs.
We haven't asked the neighbours,as one,we know, puts out traps.!to protect his chickens. esp.since I told him years ago that I saw a fox walking 'round the corner,on the road and the traps came out then.!!
we live in an urban environnment with individual housing and gardens.
Any ideas ?

Carmel, we live in an urban area, too, with lots of trees. About 3 years ago there was a tremendous noise from the top of a tree. It was a squirrel, maybe protecting young. The screaming and almost barking noise went on for ages. Squirrels make a lot of noise when they are excited or angry, so maybe yours was a squirrel, too.

A martin and a squirrel might explain what you saw and what you heard.

I have lots of grey and black squirrels - they tell each other off if they think one is getting more food than the other. They can be very noisy little things and they do chatter and screech. Here they are considered vermin, but I like them as they always seem cheerful and they do amazing acrobatics!

Thank you for info. on squirrels.
That may be the answer..the noise did seem to be coming from the top of a huge fir tree up the road. Would they have little ones so late ?i.e. Late September.
(I'll go and look up The Life and Loves of Squirrels. )
edit;
Found it and put in 'Other Birds and Animals'
Listened and the sound was like a squirrel Jo, just a whole lot angrier. :vangry: (or scared)

But I am wondering if what you heard was squirrel dealing with the martin you saw.

 It has been quite cloudy days. The dark pictures are taken in the afternoon yesterday at 17:00. The sky was more gray, but the camera program has made it lighter than it should be.

There are some flowers still (Dasiphora fructicosa 'Lovely pink')!

At 12:00 the snow had vanished. Fall is late and snow too early.
It was +5C at 14:00, and now, at 20:00. -1C.
