There are here in this topic so many great photos of different birds. Me too could have added here some pics of the birds (mostly tits and woodpeckers) I have seen on my 'squirrel feeder' and on the apple trees.. well. But now they are all there in the Finnish winter. Perhaps later then, some other time.

Manu, your Goldfinches is very beautiful
Today we had beautiful weather here, and the birds have been enjoying the sun from the tree tops, very talkative..( a little early for song yet ) But among Bullfinch and Greenfinches a single Chaffinch was visiting, and it is rare here in the middle of winter:
- Chaffinch on the ground:
- Chaffinch in the birch, enjoying the feeling of spring:
- Bluetit in sunset:

The Blue Tit is longing for spring, and checks If the house is ok. It was attacked by a woodpecker earlier this autumn, so we had to repair it...
( I apologize that the pictures are a bit blurred )
- hmmm, everything ok??
- yes, I think so...

BUT....suddenly the Blue Tit and all the other birds was disappering in a hurry. I looked the other way ( I was standing in my open bedroom window ) and I couldn't believe my luck..the Sparrow Hawk - a female - was on guard, sitting in our little maple tree.
She had it's back towards me, and didn't notice..
- just a second after I took this picture she dived into a rosehip bush, and came out with a small bird in her claw, it was impossible to see what species she caught,it happened so fast. But the reaction to this bird, it was so amazing

Thank you Felis
Today when I came home from work, Mrs Sparrowhawk was terrorizing the birds on my feeding place again..it may seem that I raise birds to her nowadays But she must have food too..
The picture is blurred because I took it through my kitchen window, but this time I saw her from the front.

Do you think Lussi that this really is a female? This brown underpart color is more likely to male.Lussi05 wrote:Thank you Felis

Based on the colour of the plumage I saw on her/(his??) back I think it's a female. I think the male has a much more gray plumage, and also a more orange colour on his cheeks. But I am only an amateur though..so I can be wrong Thank you for the response, identification of birds is so interesting..and it's so much to learn...vainamoinen wrote:

I have checked more pictures and deciced that you was right however. It's female. Usually sexes look like this http://www.raywilsonbirdphotography.co. ... whawk.html and female is much paler but there are differences surely. You are right that males have more grey on upperpart and orange eyes. Females have distinct supercilium like in your photos. Maybe this is young bird. They are browner than adults.Lussi05 wrote: Based on the colour of the plumage I saw on her/(his??) back I think it's a female. That was beautiful pictures of the Sparrowhawk...
I agree with you, it's very difficult to identify birds, and especially the young. And for me, I sometimes wonder what bird I see, searching for it..and then it turns out to be a young one, very different than the parents ( at least for a while) ..but it is very exciting Thank you for your answers Vainamoinen
