At the moment Birgit is making lots of ‘sightseeing’ because the weather is dreamlike. Each bird observers heart is jumping with joy seeing such a flock of flamingos on the sky:

Yesterday Birgit experienced a big surprise at the garbage dump of Los Barrios. Who looks close at the photo will discover two giants between the nearly 100 Griffon Vultures. Those are Monk Vultures which normally only can be seen at Extremadura. But as bird friends told me three of them spend already the whole winter in Andalusia. Maybe they spread out their territory? This would be good news! Monk Vultures as nesting in comparison to the Griffon Vultures not at sheer rock walls but in trees.

Here is the report acting also from the Stork colony of San Roque and their adventurous life!

Continuation to the Guadalhorce-Mouth, where yesterday a couple of Northern Pintails arrived:

Image

Birgits excitement was huge, because these elegant dabbling ducks one does not get to face there often.

But also the other ducks were such a joy!

In Birgits area it was also cold for quite a while, but now the temperatures rose and this immediately brings the green frogs to the scene.

Their fights for territory can’t be missed due to the drollness, that’s why I even take photos during the night.

Really unforgettable experiences! Birgit still feels creeps thinking about the emotion on the other day. On the highway a flock of about 40 birds was about to fly in northern direction.

At the Saline of Bonanza this time we met several Slender-billed Gulls and of course also other different residents:

Thanks to the help of Spanish bird friends Birgit finally could make out where the very much hidden entrance to the Saline and Marsh areas between Jerez de la Frontera and Cádiz is located. Upto now Birgit only could catch a view from the highway to the Saline of Santa Maria and was wondering why so many Flamingos are all the time flying above the highway

This area …

Image

… Birgit urgently wants to visit with having more time. It’s such a wonderful area with especially a ruin with numerous Stork nests on the way

Today Birgit came back from a several day lasting journey and had at the end the idea to have a look at the garbage dump of Los Barrios. On the way they had met several Black Kites and so one can imagine that they are also to be met at the dump. And so it was! Imagine, just on this sunny weekend about 15.000 Black Kites had crossed the Strait of Gibraltar and many of them took a rest at Los Barrios.

Stunning this Migration!

Birgit got an answer from Radolfzell because of one of the read ring of a White Stork. What a fantastic story probably best know in the district of Pfalz! Birgit already wrote an Email to the people of “Aktion Pfalzstorch” to let them know where one of their Storks spends its winter.

Here AE 4216 DER on the garbage dump of Los Barrios:

And here its biographiy:

Unfortunately Birgit didn’t see a single Raptor yesterday at the Strait of Gibraltar. The weather was good also on Friday, that’s why 4.500 birds took the chance to fly over and Birgit and her friends missed it. But on the garbage dump of Los Barrios they still could see something, for example many Little Egrets …

Image

… and also hundreds of Black Kites, banded White Storks and even a banded Griffon Vulture.
