this has been a winter of world records of oldest WTEs. a WTE who had been ringed on July 14th 1980 in Sodankylä Finnish Lappland (Northernmost Finland) by Seppo Saari was spotted in a feeding place in Umeå in Eastern Sweden on January 24th 2011 and the number code E-7152 in the rings was read. its age was thus 30 years and 7 months.

now this record is history (for a while, because this was a living bird). it has turned out that a WTE found dead in January in Föglö island in Åland (the archipelago between Finland and Sweden in the Northern Baltic sea) was even older than the previous. the Zoological Museum of the University of Helsinki has studied the bird and found that it was ringed in 1978 on the East coast of Sweden. it was thus the most long-lived wild white-tailed sea eagle known so far. imagine: 32 and half years!

this news is so brand new that i didn't find it in any international newspages yet. it's a news provided by The Finnish News Agency (STT) which got its information from Torsten Stjernberg who is the head of the WWF Finland's White-tailed Sea eagle working group. it was printed in most of Finnish newspapers yesterday.

i have received more information on the world's oldest WTEs from Hannu Vainiopekka. the WTE in his picture was the oldest WTE seen in the wild in 2009 when it was photographed in February in SW-Finland. it was ringed in June 1983 in Quarken-area which is the narrowest part in the Gulf of Bothnia in the Northern Baltic sea (a map here: http://fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiedosto:Kvarken.png).
this bird has been later controlled again in December 2010, also in SW-Finland.

the most recent world-record WTE was found on Föglö-island in the Åland-archipelago.

A White-Tailed Sea-Eagle savaged a dog

A dog which was guarding sheep was torn by a white-tailed sea-eagle (WTE) on Tuesday in Karinranta, Siikajoki [on the coast of the northern part of the Gulf of Bothnia]. The dog had been out for about two hours when its owner Kari Kurikka went out to look for it. He says that nothing could be done to help the dog when he found it: its stomach had been completely ripped open. The commissioner for predator issues of the local Game-keeping and hunting association of Siikajokilaakso Esko Kulha visited the scene on Wednesday and says that he has never seen anything like that in his long hunter’s career. “The marks in the fresh snow were unambiguous: the attack had come from air.”

Kurikka says that the WTE has been a frequent visitor near his sheep-yard all winter, and it had tried to catch the dog already once before while the dog was sitting on their doorstep. Mrs. Kurikka happened to open the door at the same time as the WTE made an attempt on the dog and the dog was saved that time. Mr. Kurikka tells that the WTE captured several lambs during summer. He also says that the WTE is exceptionally fearless: it keeps look-out in a birch next to the sheep-yard and is not disturbed even when people drive by the tree with a snow scooter.
Esko Kulha believes that the WTE is the same individual which he saw destroying some black grouse-decoys “into smithereens” in Siikajoki-area last autumn. “This is such a bird of prey that has become exceptionally vicious. One should look after one’s dog while going out in wild terrains and on sea ice.” says Kulha.

The above mentioned article caused an animated discussion on the website of the Finnish newspaper Raahen Seutu - as yet 139 comments.

the comments there are like what you can imagine whenever people are writing anonymously. others say that all pooches should be fed to wolves (this discussion leads immediately to wolves which arouse heated opinions, too. ). others write that all eagles should be killed because they've never done anything good. and etc. and so-forth....

The Duna-Drava National Park in cooperation with MME/BirdLife Hungary has established a White-tailed Eagle database for South-East and Central Europe (observation and breeding data). More than 1400 breeding records are included so far.

Another interesting WTE record: World's Largest White Tailed Eagle found at the bottom of Sermitsiaq fjord in Greenland

The bird was measured by experts at Greenland's Institute of Nature and turned out to be the biggest ever measured, the wingspan being 253 cm, the nose 6,3 cm and the claws from front to back where 21,1 cm!

Again sad eagle news from Lübeck, Northern Germany... Two White-tailed Eagles, seven and eight years old, were found dead near their nest tree last weekend. Another breeding pair has been reported as missing. Some kilometres away at Schaalsee 48 ravens and 1 red kite were found poisoned by the insecticide Dimethoate in April 2012. In this region at least four White-tailed eagles were killed by the insecticide Mevinphos in 2010.

World Wildlife Fund is offering 3000 Euro for information leading to the conviction of the person or persons responsible for poisoning the birds.
